Randal's Machine Company
Topic:
Production/Operations Management
Characters: Joe Hare
, recently hired to remedy personnel problems that are affecting productivity Barbara Jones, VP of Operations, niece of the company president
Randal's Machine Company is a $50MM per year custom auto design shop located in New
Orleans, Louisiana. It has a workforce of 30 designers and 15 office personnel. Joe Hare was
hired from Ultimate Auto out of Orlando, Florida, three months ago as Randal's production
manager. His background includes an undergraduate industrial engineering degree and three
years of purchasing experience with Ford Trucks immediately after college. He was hired by
Barbara Jones, Vice President of Operations and niece of the company president. This made
him a good fit for Randal's Machine company's needs.
Recently the company has had difficulty meeting scheduled deadlines. Joe was hired to
improve the company's performance in on-time deliveries. So far, he has been learning the
systems of the operations and studying workable solutions, but he has not yet determined the
best course of action to recommend. Auto design is a very lucrative business requiring
unique skills and creativity to meet the market's demands. Car design projects can take
several months to complete, but it is necessary to keep production moving to continue
achieving the profit that the president expects. On Monday, an order for $300,000, which had been in the shop for three months, was
scheduled for shipment. On Friday morning, June 21, the production manager reported to
Barbara that the order would not be completed as scheduled and would require at least one
more week. Concerned about the impact of this delay on the job status, Joe decided to
investigate the cause of the delay before informing Barbara of the problem. Joe soon
discovered that the company was top-heavy on the creative side and did not have enough
production assistants to move the cars forward in a timely manner to keep up with the
company's demand. Designers are the lifeblood of the company.
Since Joe has just been here a few months, what course of action would you recommend he
take for Barbara, and what kind of background information (i.e.. Charts, data, research, etc.)
should he include to help him prove his case? How soon can he promise her that the car will
be shipped? How does this case relate to strategic management?
Use the conceptual framework model to analyze the case study before making your final
recommendation. It is a standard model used by consultants.
