CJ 210 Project Grant Proposal Statement of Need
Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.
Address the following in your statement of need:
Ideological Influence on Professional Practice
Ideological and professional practice is that all officers remain firm, fair, and consistent to every, and all
offenders within the prison system. That will be what keeps an officer from being a target for an
offender.
Goals and Programs
The main goal of programs of sentencing are to make the world a better and safer place giving all of the
criminals of the world is to give a consequence to any criminal act the would otherwise be against the
law of the nation making them be better people in the end. Though there are a lot of them that do not
even allow the system to make them better. To many the system would seem like it does not work given
the recidivism is so high.
Impact of Sentencing Structures
With the current impact of sentencing structures offenders have a standing rule that is the three-strike
rule that is standard in other words you show in the court room three times your punishment grows and
grows. With the maximum penalty being life sentences or in some cases a death penalty being death
depending on the crime committed.
Invisible Punishment
Invisible punishment is the thing that happens to them when they are incarcerated. They can be seen as
follows the loss of family, relationships, finances, and the loss of jobs as a result.
Structure and Logistics of Correctional Facilities
When it comes to the structure of the prison system, it is an organized system logistically it runs at its
peak efficiency of an organization.
Processing
Upon entry into the prison system, all offenders are processed meaning personal information such as
age, height, weight, gender, religion, family, health, and emergency contact.
All this information in
needed so that the facility knows how best to provide care to those who need it as well as what area
they will be housed in there are many other factors that tie into this decision such as example
transgender offenders are housed in a protective custody so that way, they have a simulation of safety
among others who are like them although they have on occasion assaulted each other. As the saying
goes, birds of a feather flock together. Furthermore 99.3(not a direct quote just an estimation) in
another protective custody housing which is separate from the transgender protective housing. The state
also takes it a step further and will only allow the general population to intermingle with the building in
which they are assigned. Whereas the Protective custody will ONLY go out when all of the other custody
levels have been secured back into their respective housing buildings. This is to provide that extra
protection to keep the possibility of being assaulted to a minimum although the chances are not always
0, it could always happen at any time. After every ingress and egress through the buildings will have a
head count as well as every hour on the half-hour a unit-wide count is done to confirm the locations of
all offenders on the unit as well as off the unit.
Structure
The buildings are all very structured by design a unit will have an A side and B side based upon the unit
either side could either be a high custody or minimum custody ex. G-1 to G-3 are on one side and G-4
and G-5 on the other Protective custody or P-1 though P-5 are located in the same the other
designation’s. Based upon the unit each building has a breakdown within the specific building each
division is given a designation such as 1-9 with Pods (housing areas) A-L depending on the layout they
could have 1-3 sections ex. 4 building A pod would tell an officers where they were assigned to for the
shift and as for the offender it would be 4 Building A pod 3 section 64 cell Top bunk on paper it would
look like 4A-64T. This format is a structured and well-organized system that truly does work and the
factor that would make it not work is the human aspect of it although as humans we are creatures of
habit once that routine is broken there are many who would break down and there are some who would
just roll with the punches.
Age-Related Diversity
When it come to the age ranges there is more diversity than you would think I do not know to much
about Texas youth correctional other than when you turn 18 you are tried as an adult and sent to big boy
prison. For an ex. There are ages 18-68 within a correctional facility you wouldn’t house an 18 year old
with a 30 year old the old could take advantage of the young nor would you house an 18 year old with a
68 year old the young could take advantage of the old so typically an 18-25 would be house together 30-
40 would be housed together and so on and so forth. Weight is also a factor that goes into it as well each
cell mate would have a weight difference of 5-10lbs of one another.
Systemic Issues
[In 600–800 words, analyze the impact of diversity in prisons; explain the rise of incarceration rates and
strategies to reduce them; and describe factors that impact prison culture.
Impact of Diversity
The law does not see color all ages are susceptible to being locked away behind bars.
Rise of Incarceration and Reduction Strategies
Incarceration happens when you break the laws of the nation that is one the rise and the state is always
coming up with a tactic to try and reduce the chances of recidivism becoming sparse.
Prison Culture
When comes to the culture within the prison is one that seems more like segregation offenders will gang
up based on race or ethnicity They will sit together, eat together, and even work out together, and are
caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. You could run the risk of starting a war between
races/gangs or cliques. Even run the risk of getting yourself killed it is a risk as an officer as well by
upsetting the wrong offender.
