Family Artifact Assignment
Barnes’s Historical Series: A Brief History of The United States
Provenance
My family discovered this artifact when my stepfather’s grandpa's friend owned a repair
store. The customer who gave him the artifact to repair did not have enough money to get the
object back from getting fixed. The repair shop owner knew my stepdad's grandfather liked
historical artifacts and asked him to buy them. My stepdad passed it down because his
grandfather knew he was also interested in history and historical artifacts. Since I am also
interested in history, I hope he will pass on this artifact to me one day so I can pass it down to my
kids.
Physical Description
This artifact is a dark brown book with a black spine that is an inch and a half thick. It’s
six inches wide and eight inches tall. The book has an engraving, making it have a unique
texture. It is a hardcover book; the materials used are nineteenth-century cardboard and period-
era paper. The paper color has a yellowish tint to it, not like the books today. The book also has
some weight to it, weighing 1.4 pounds. The front of the book has designs engraved in it, and so
does the back. The book is also in good condition, with few tears or rips. The book is missing a
page but looks excellent for its age.
Personal History and Memories
When my stepdad was a kid, he got ahold of the book and tore a small part of the book,
which they fixed with tape. Some notes are written in the book, but I do not know what it
belongs to. There are also some signatures with a date next to some names back to 1889 and

1933. When I first got ahold of the book, I was flipping the pages too fast and ripped a page off;
luckily, we could fix it. The page I ripped was a map of North America and how different the
maps looked back then compared to now.
Date or Era
This artifact is a nineteenth-century book made in 1889 by the American Book Company.
The authors were Steele, Joel Dorman, and Esther Baker Steele.
Importance to American History from 1865-Today
This book was significant because it shows how people viewed American history in the
nineteenth century. It also shows how they wrote and viewed specific topics differently
compared to how we view them today. “Schools and teachers relied on textbooks to structure
learning. Teachers placed students in groups based on their progress through the textbook. In
small country schools there were few supplies, so lessons were oral.”

When this history book
came out, it still did a one-room schoolhouse and relied on these books to teach. This book
would be prepared for elementary-level students as well as middle schoolers. The book itself has
two pages called “Suggestions To Teachers.”
2
The first couple of sentences says, “Many teachers
have successfully employed the following method of using this work. At the commencement of
the study, let each pupil be required to draw an outline map Of North America, at least 18 x 24
inches in size. This should contain only physical features, viz, coastline, mountains, lakes, and
rivers.”

Even then, they still had us drawing maps and labeling features of the maps we drew.
Even the contexts of the book are similar to what we learned in middle school. What things are

has pictures just like the textbooks today have.
