Research Proposal - Online Cherie E. Grigsby Grand Canyon University HIS-450: U.S. History Since 1945 Professor Joshua Watson September 3, 2023 1
Research Proposal - Online The research topic that this proposal intends to explore is the role of pop culture in influencing public perspectives and attitudes during the Cold War timeline. With a focus more on the period covered in this course, the proposal would like to examine how different methods of media, such as television shows, movies, music, and advertisements, reflected and influenced society standards, political beliefs, and consumer spending patterns (Moss & Thomas, 2013). Recognizably, pop culture has played a massive role in echoing and shaping the values, fears, and aspirations during the Cold War. The research will explore primary sources of popular culture inspired by the course's emphasis on understanding the era's social, political, and economic events. This will include analyzing influential TV shows such as "Leave It to Beaver" or iconic movies like "Dr. Strangelove" and advertisements that marketed consumer products as symbols of American values. In addition, the paper will look at John F. Kennedy's inaugural speech of 1961 to aid in framing the political atmosphere and intentions during this time. Doing this will also help to paint a better picture and provide a greater understanding of how popular culture reflected and sometimes challenged the common political narratives of this era. In conclusion, this research proposal investigates the complex relationship between pop culture and the Cold War era in the United States. By examining various primary sources, the research intends to shed light on how cultural novelties of the time contributed to shaping the American experience during this critical period. 2
