CJ 305 8-1 Discussion:
Misuse of Technology
The article ‘
Facial Recognition Software Moves From Overseas Wars to Local Police
,’ depicts
the misuse of technology in the criminal justice system. Police departments across the United
States have adopted the use of Facial recognition software in a bid to fight crime. Even though
technology has been instrumental in ensuring and supporting law and order, serious questions
have been raised about its misuse by Law enforcement officers. First, police departments buy
this technology; it is never revealed to the public. Second, it is often deployed in secrecy,
which is against violating the American constitution. Third, the NYPD has been accused of
collecting citizen information without consent. During the George Floyd protests, Police used
video footage to unfairly target protestors with no prior criminal history.
Based on the findings of the video footage, the police officers would crawl the social media of
protestors without their knowledge to decide if they are a person of interest in an earlier
crime. Citizens have also complained of Police stopping them arbitrarily and having their
photos taken and matched against a criminal database even though they have not committed
any crime(Williams,2021). This is a blatant violation of first amendment rights. Law
enforcement agencies are collecting data from citizens without their consent. In addition,
police officers have been known to wrongfully target minorities due to inherent bias in facial
recognition technology. A lack of accountability pervasive in most law enforcement
departments essentially drives the misuse of technology. For example, a police officer can
stop a person arbitrarily and conduct a criminal background check even if they are not suspect
because they know no one will hold them accountable.
There must be an elaborate police framework that guides the use of technology in the criminal
justice system. First, a police officer violating the set regulation must be punished severely.
Secondly, there must be citizen education on the use of technology in the criminal justice
system; citizens are informed about their rights and where they can report in case they feel
freedom is being infringed.
