Bianca Madrigal 16 September 23 Spanish colonies took religion extremely seriously the Spanish kings focused on converting all people into Christians. There were churches at every plaza mayor next to the government’s building expressing that they went hand in hand with one another. Churches were more powerful than their local government. The long-term effect on the Spanish was that it built unity in the community a strong bond. While English colonies had many groups who were religious outcaste seeking religious freedom. All religions in their colonies were tolerated and no discrimination on what people practiced whatsoever. English colonies do not carry any unified effort into converting the native people as they feel the complete opposite as the native do about religion. The long-term effect is that the English are more disconnections and connections are harder to build. Land for Spanish colonies were only in the hands of the wealthy. The wealthy were outnumbered by the poor. If their soldiers did well, they were awarded land but if you had no connections, you had no land. The Spanish did not believe in making money off their land. They had laws in place against dividing and selling land (they considered it gambling). Long term effect is that the income is a lot lower. Unlike the Spanish colonies the English colonies made a living on profits of selling land. The land system is for making money. Long term effects here are that the English colonies are wealthier and can continue to make money off buying and selling land for a very long-time securing income for a long time. This will assure their families are well taken care of.
