Describe the historical event that you selected. Why is this event significant?
The historical event that I have selected is the Irish Immigration to the United States between 1840-1920. Within this topic I have chosen to look more into the religious aspect of their challenges. They were predominantly Roman Catholics, and this had been a religion practiced in Ireland for hundreds of years. This even was significant to the changes that the US were facing especially in both pre- and post-civil war. (

). Having been through both religious and political conflicts; and given the promise of land ownership and religious freedom, this offer was too much of a good opportunity to give up. The conflict between the Protestants and the Catholics that was at the forefront of the conflict in Ireland carried over to the US. Eventually overcoming the religious discrimination and being accepted into the American way of life. Describe at least two secondary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your sources must be relevant to your event and must be of an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes these sources appropriate and relevant for investigating your event? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices?
My secondary sources are the Library of Congress and Macaulay EDU and a website explaining the differences between the 2 prominent religions during the time.
I chose these three sources to complement each other while assisting in my research. One of the sources is from the Library of Congress and the other from Macaulay EDU. They both give a different variation of the religious practices of the Irish immigrants. I decided on

specifically these two sources based on searching for key words within each of these sources and offered a lot of InSite into the struggles they faced. By using these resources, I believe I am able to answer my question about What prejudices did the Irish Immigrants face when it came to their pre-establish religion. They both provide a lot of information regarding the lifestyles and the difficulties that the Irish Immigrants faced and how they overcame it. I chose the ‘Diffen’ source because I found useful as it explains is detail the differences between both the Catholic and the Protestant religions and even though they may seem similar there are vast differences. This gave me a lot of valuable insight to both the similarities and differences between both religions. Describe at least two primary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your sources must be relevant to your event and must be of an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: How do these sources relate to your secondary sources? What do they add to your understanding of the event? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your event?
Within this Library of Congress page there are several incredible primary sources allowing us to read letters about the journey, explanations of their life and their ‘American dream journey’. My second primary source is Spartacus Educational, contains letter written from men and women who made the journey from Ireland to the US and what they encountered when they finally got to the United States. Both of these sources offer firsthand encounters of the trials and tribulations that they faced moving over to the US. Based on your review of primary and secondary sources, develop a research question related to the historical event you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about?
Based on a review of primary and secondary sources, I would like to know more about why the Irish immigration choose all these promises over what they already knew; knowing

that they could potentially face discrimination, the ‘start’ of their new life would be potentially harder than just staying in Ireland.
Identify an audience that would be interested in your historical event and research question. For example, who would benefit most from hearing your message?
I believe the audience who would be most interested in my historical event and research question would be activists and historians and possibly other immigrants who want to view the past and how things changed. Activists understand how past actions have defined our future today. They are also very interested in learning more about the past so we can make changes and prevent any bad or negative life changing events. Immigrants chose to come to this country and yes face difficult challenges however it is always good looking back
to see where this country has come from and where it currently is. Describe how and why you can tailor your message to your audience, providing specific examples. For example, will your audience understand historical terminology and principles associated with your event, or will you need to explain these? How will you communicate effectively with your audience?
If activists and historians are my audience, they will be able to understand the historical terminology that I might use in my presentation. However, with immigrants also being part of my planned audience then I will try to explain the historical terminology and allow for an easier read for the information. I plan to communicate effectively with my audience by presenting factual evidence whilst also allowing for easy reading. I will also keep my information simple, focused, and to the point.
