List your historical research topic here: o
Climate Change and Environmental Issues: Chernobyl
Graded portion:
Distinguish between primary and secondary sources.
Primary sources are from someone involved in the event during the time of the event. Examples include artifacts, photos, videos, and eyewitnesses.
Secondary sources are not directly related to the event. Normally they occur after the event. Examples include books, biographies and papers on the topic.
Explain why it is important to consult a variety of sources when conducting historical research. Include specific details and examples.
Primary or secondary sources that come from a person’s account of the event can present a biased view. A person researching the event would want to include multiple sources to obtain multiple views on the subject. An example would be how that CNN and FOX news can cover the same event but have completely different commentary on the event. Basically, anything that has a human involved will contain some sort of bias. Identify one primary
source that would help investigate your research question (include the title, author, and link to the source).

Choose a current event related to the subject of your historical research question and explain how they are connected.
Currently there is a big push for being carbon neutral and electrification. Without the events of Chernobyl, I believe we would be much further along on becoming carbon neutral. During the 80’s to 00’s nuclear was the most cost-effective form of energy that did not burn fossil fuels. Solar and wind were available, but the capital cost dissuaded executives and consumers. Now governments including the United States, China, France and Germany realize that nuclear must be part of their energy portfolio in order to move away from fossil fuels. The designers of the new plants understand that an accident cannot be allowed to happen again. The new plants can safely shut down automatically. Some of the new plants (SMR) can be built on an assembly line which helps with the high cost of initial capital investment. 2
