The narrative of the primary sources are from opposing views. One is from a US official with clear bias and the other is from a KGB officer that is trying to relay information on the situation to people he reports to. The view from the US official is understandable since this occurred during the cold war when there were bad political relations between the USA and Russia. The US
official is justified in being skeptical. Also, since this was a “secret” document and not initially released to the public it is understandable that it was written with bias.
For secondary sources “Chernobyl: An early report” is presented from a scientific perspective and describes the effects to people and the environment with as much detail as the authors had available. Presenting the information in this manner matches my way of thinking. The narrative for “Political Fallout” is that the Russian used what worked for them in the past to cover up much of the negative perspectives around Chernobyl. There were written rules at the time about informing the Russian population, these limits were so high that very few were required
to be informed of the situation. As with the primary sources this should be expected during the Cold War. Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your historical event.
Countries do not want to look bad in the eyes of the world. Different nations handle bad press in
different ways. Russia at the time preferred to cover up, lessen the situation or lie. Contemporary scientist do not believe the data presented around Chernobyl was accurate. The longstanding way of dealing with bad press has influenced how world events that occur in Russian today will be perceived by world governments and the public and whether they will believe the information. The was in Ukraine and the Russian propaganda supports that they still follow the same practices. Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question. Please provide your revised research question and then explain how the chosen narrative helps you better event.
The chosen narrative helps me better understand my research question by helping me understand that where I get my cited material could affect my research. I need to look at the origin of the source and make a judgment on whether to trust the source or possibly find corroborating information if I doubt the source. The bias of the source could affect the outcome of the research paper if I don’t understand the bias is there.
Please include your research question here:
How did the events of Chernobyl affect the environment then, now and into the future?
