HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Climate Change and Environmental Issues: Chernobyl Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event. Political: Occurred during the Cold War. Russian did not immediately share news of the event with Europe even though radiation sensors in several European countries could identify that a radioactive release had occurred. Economic and Political: There was a known design flaw in the RBMK-1000 reactor, the design was cheap to build, and Russia already had several in service. There was a lack of safety culture in the plant. The steps that could cause a catastrophic failure where not noted as an area of concern in the operation procedure. Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event. The KGB, which was the main security agency for Russian. Journalist and scientist collected samples after the event. The KGB participated in operations to swap samples with clean samples. There was a release of radiation from the plant in 1982 that was covered up by the KGB. The KGB had officers specifically trained to monitor and ensure safe operation of nuclear plants. They stopped foreigners staying in Ukraine from returning home after the accident. Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event. One of the main goals of the KBG was to combat anti-communist political and religious ideas and to deal with the people who promoted them. They were able to use their power to change the narrative that was presented around the event. Keeping a positive spin on Russia was a primary goal. Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event. I believe that if it were not for the cold war, the Russian would have likely reached out to another country for assistance. There are instances now where Russia may not reach out to the USA for help but they will ask China for help. In the current USA nuclear program everyone is willing to help each other. There are dedicated communication channels where a nuclear site can ask the entire USA fleet for their thoughts or help on something that has happened. The USA plants also share information with foreign plants of the same design. Russia’s unwillingness to ask for help, likely made the outcome of the disaster worse. Other countries could have provided assistance and equipment. For instance, many countries provided assistance to Japan after their nuclear disaster.
Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of your topic. The relationship between countries can directly affect the outcome of issues that occur for a given country. An event may have played out completely differently if it occurred today with today’s views.
