Cost containment is “elusive” due to the broken system that is the U.S. healthcare system. Our system is run by multiple insurance programs like that of public, private, or government insurance. If you have no insurance then you must find a means to afford atrociously costly medical interventions via a payment schedule, upfront cost, or hope for grants/assistance in medical coverage. Obtaining insurance is not as easy as one would think, we must purchase it out of our own pocket, be eligible for state assistance, eligible from a government agency, or our employer may assist with cost sharing. If insurance covered all medical costs, maybe more people would buy into it, as many people believe they don’t need it, they never get sick. The addition of cost associated after paying premium that can equate from thousands of dollars a year to then having to cover copays, cost share on your medical bills and loss of wages if working make it worse. I know many people who do not have insurance due to not having a mailing address, being homeless makes it sometimes difficult to obtain even public insurance. According to Bifluco et al., Medicaid has not expanded into twelve states, which has caused a Medicaid gap to some of the American population, twelve million alone in Texas. To purchase into your own program, you need to navigate the marketplace to try to obtain your own at an absorbent amount (I looked once for coverage and was well over twenty-five hundred for a month for a family plan). If you just lost a job, even cobra insurance can be the difference between paying rent or continuing coverage. Health insurance was changed with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), to make it more inclusive and affordable. According to Janopaul et al., (2023), prostate cancer identification increased at early detection, as to prior to the initiation of the ACA. After Trump made changes to the ACA, many citizens had losses of coverage and became uninsured in the years to follow those changes, according to DeNisco (2024). Hence why understanding the healthcare system is important as it is a fluid system. Healthcare managers need a greater understanding to be able to assist in implementing changes, which can affect the quality or delivery of care. Policy makers need to understand the system, to initiate changes and
keep healthcare at a standard. Keeping an eye on regulations, healthcare delivery networks, and overall return is essential to keeping healthcare at a balance for all.
