1.
For each of the studies listed below: i) identify the study design and ii) discuss at least one pro and one con of
the study design within the context of the given scenario. If there are alternative study designs that could have
been used to answer the research question, you should also: iii) state the alternative study design(s) and iv) state
whether you would prefer the given study design or one of the alternative study designs and explain your
reasoning.
a)
Study 1 – You would like to investigate the effectiveness of this year’s flu vaccine. You select a sample of
1,000 individuals who do not have the flu, 450 who received the vaccine and 550 who did not receive the
vaccine. You then follow them over time to determine who develops flu symptoms.
b)
Study 2 – You would like to investigate the effect of childhood home environment (rural/urban) on the risk of
developing lung cancer (yes/no) in late adulthood among women in the US aged 65+ who never smoked. You
select a sample of 500 individuals who currently have lung cancer and 500 individuals who have never had
lung cancer and administer a questionnaire about their home environment during childhood. Assume the
prevalence of lung cancer in the source population is known to be ~2.5%.
c)
Study 3 – You help manage a group of 350 current hospital employees who all began working for the hospital
10 years ago. When individuals were first hired, they were required to complete a basic questionnaire that
asked a variety of questions, including questions about demographics and medical history. You would like to
investigate the effect of age at the time of initial employment at the hospital (<30/30+) on current job
performance evaluation (pass/fail).
