I currently work for the San Antonio AIDS Foundation, which is a non-
profit organization that offers free STI/HIV testing and case
management, mental health, meals and housing for people living with
HIV. Through my work, I have a supervisor who communicates with us
through the Teams App because it is easier to send a message to the
entire team and to do video calls whenever the supervisors are out of
town for a training. Teams has been really effective in communicating
because when we are in a testing session, if someone tests positive for
HIV we are able to contact the early intervention specialist to do the
warm handoff to get the client immediately started on medication before
they leave. Martin et al (2017) recognizes that telesupervision is when
mediums like videoconference, email and teleconference are used to
provide clinical supervision to continuing professional development
health professionals. I will be starting my social work practicum in
January at the Pride Center in San Antonio, TX where I was informed that
it will be heavy on telehealth services and telesupervision. The Pride
Center is a newer non-profit that does not have adequate office space to
house interns and staff, so a lot of staff work from home. Some positives
about TAST would be that it would allow for greater flexibility and
accessibility to supervisors and would allow for real-time feedback and
collaboration. My practicum supervisor is a licensed clinical social
worker who enjoys having interns and clinical students as supervisees
because she loves to teach and give feedback. When possible, it is
recommended that the initial session with the supervisor be face-to-face
to go over goals and expectations to then transition to telesupervision
(Martin et al., 2017). If an in-person session is not possible, then using a
videoconference method would be recommended in order to read non-
verbal cues as opposed to only talking on a telephone. Some negative
about TAST could be the lack of in-person interaction that would deficit
the connection and ability to build rapport with the supervisor. There are
also technical issues that should be considered such as poor internet
connections and software glitches. These components should be
considered because if a supervisor is observing a session and it was more
serious in nature and the video glitches or is disconnected then the social
work intern could find themselves in a situation that they may not be
prepared for, and also making sure that the client is even accepting of
using technology. It is important to consider that different social workers
may engage in telesupervision differently and that the NASW Code of
Ethics should always be considered along with client confidentiality.
