What is the best advice you have ever received? Describe why you feel it was helpful.
Driven by my passion for entrepreneurship, I challenged myself to go offline with my online business- BestBuyGifts-
and ran a retail pop-up for 3 weeks. The store, a unit owned by my family, was located in East Vancouver in an
impoverished part of town. Having the opportunity to experiment with this space was without a doubt a socioeconomic
privilege. I sold well-conditioned household goods at a discounted price, hoping that the goods could benefit those in
need while also gaining sales experience.
My first customer was a man. He darted into the store with tattered clothes and worn-out shoes and directly
approached my rack of used suits. I felt my tongue tying up in a knot as I was nervous about making my first sale.
I stayed quiet and let the man browse around until he furrowed his brow in uncertainty after repeatedly checking the
price tag. As he turned to leave, a rush of anxiety and determination rushed through me. I mustered up the courage
and politely approached the man.
I learned that the client had an upcoming job interview and needed formal attire but found the suits ($30 each) too
expensive. I tried stressing the suits' durability and long-term benefits but the man wasn't convinced.
I adapted and finally focused on the "make or break factor"-- money. I offered a $20 package deal that included a
textured suit and a pair of oxford shoes. Moments later, for the first time, nothing brought me greater joy than saying,
"thank you for buying best with us at BestBuyGifts."
In 3 weeks, I have earned over $2000, but more importantly, I have grown immensely. Finding a persuasive selling
point for my goods each time was challenging, but I managed to do so because I know all my goods are a "best buy."
No matter if it is a product, business, or person, everything has a marketable story but before I can take BestBuyGift's
story to the next level, I need to enrich my own first-
a story that cultivates and innovates, and Queen's is where I can
start.

Describe a significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge.
"Ducky," a homophone for my Chinese name, may seem childish upon initial hearing, but this very name correlates to
one of Dad's best pieces of advice: Be like a duck, calm above water, but with feet going crazy below. This advice has
become my mantra in my swimming career and approach to life.
When I first started swimming competitively, I had a lack of confidence in my abilities and was constantly comparing
myself to others. Dad noticed my struggles and showed me a video of ducks paddling furiously underwater. Confused,
I disregarded it until dad explained the "duck theory," which proved to be invaluable as I continued to train and
compete. It helped me to improve my technique, increase my endurance, and develop mental toughness. Keeping the
advice in mind, I achieved things that I never thought were possible, including winning gold in the SCAA 200 meters
freestyle race.
Aside from perseverance, I also learned that I am not a lone duck from dad's advice, especially when I embarked on
the journey of becoming a lifeguard. By completing the National Lifeguard Course, not only did I learn the crucial
expertise of water rescue, but I also participated in a team-oriented environment that enhanced my leadership and
analytical skills. Just like ducks, my fellow lifeguards and I stayed composed on the surface but worked tirelessly
together in secret to prevent accidents. Today, I am proud to be a lifeguard at the Arbutus Club, where I can help
people feel safe in the water like I do.
The advice we receive from others helps us navigate through challenges and guides us to success. As I enter
Queen's, I strive to seek out and listen to the wisdom of professors and peers and live by dad's advice, paddling with
my "flock of ducks" and working hard beneath the surface, but above, everyone sees a calm and smiling face.
