Discussion Thread: Research-Based Practices and Decision Making
As a teacher in special education, share how you and/or the administration at your organization
(or desired professional role upon completing your doctorate) use research to inform your decision-making process. Are evidence-based practices encouraged? If so, how? Do you think this is effective? Why or why not? What are the challenges teachers and administrators face with ensuring they are utilizing evidence-based best practices in the classroom? What recommendations do you have (based on research or observation in your professional setting) for educators to help close the perennial research-to-practice gap in the field of education?
As an early childhood special education teacher in an applied behavior analysis classroom, we use evidence based practices on a regular basis. As each child with autism spectrum disorder is unique, so are the treatments and techniques are available. We use data and real world evidence to decide what types of intervention strategies to use in order to reach the desired outcome with each child with ASD. Once the intervention and instruction has been in place for a period of time, progress is monitored in order to see if the outcome is being reached, and then make a decision on whether to continue the current intervention or modify the intervention strategy. In my classroom, we currently have 7 students with autism diagnosis as well as 3 with Development Disability diagnosis. During each work session, data is kept for each child in their own program binder. This allows the Behavior Analyst to track the progress of each student where she can modify, adapt or change the intervention completely, depending on the progress. Evidence practices are most definitely encouraged at my school, especially in the ABA classrooms. I agree that it is an effective approach to learning for children with ASD. Some challenges could also be encountered in this method, such as a lack of reinforcements or understanding each students different way of learning. In ABA, each student is taught within their own individualized program. It might take some trial and error to figure out what works best with each one. In order to attempt to close the gap in research, I would recommend set goals and track progress to reach those goals. Also, keeping good relationships with your IEP team and behavior analyst who you are required to work with continuously will help keep the flow of your educational plan running smoothl
