MEASURING AND COLLECTING DATA
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this unit 3 project assignment will involve examining and explaining the
value of a balanced scorecard. This assignment will also attempt to give clear and definitive
details explaining the method and procedures in which the this particular tool can be used to both
assess and improve performance within the health care organization or facility. The balanced
scorecard represents a strategic method and procedure tool for measuring the performance of
management for the purpose of assisting companies or organizations with improving and
identifying their internal operations in order to produce successful external outcomes. The
scorecard can be of great use when helping to measure and gauge the data and information of an
organizations past while also using that very same information to help make the necessary
improvements based on feedback that will also have an impact on the decisions regarding the
organizations future. The scorecard for the most part will involve measuring and gauging four
key points of interset or concern. They are business processes, finance, customers, learning and
growth. The collection of data can prove to be crucial when trying to provide quantitative results
as executives and managers try to comprehend and gather the necessary information (Betto et al.,
2022).
MEASURING AND COLLECTING DATA
In 1992, the balanced scorecard was initially created for business industry markets by
David Norton and Robert Kaplan. The method is now used to help measure and gauge the
strategic and performance management of health care organizations. The use of this method now
makes it possible to identify and recognize problems or hindrances of a health care organization
while helping to connect a balanced group or set of indicators using planned alignments that can
measure or gauge performance. The indicators used for assessing the performance for health care
organizations will likely consist of feasibility, scientific soundness and importance or necessity.
The scorecard can be a useful tool or method when trying to align the interest of the employee in
line with the same interest of the health care organization or facility. This will allow in many
instances for the employee to function in a manner that is organized for the purpose of achieving
success that matches or mirrors that of the mission and values of the health care organization.
Utilizing well developed and constructed balanced scorecard can help to better define those task
which are deemed necessary for helping to improve and establish better relationships between
mangers and staff, increase motivation for better performance, reduce stress and develop
strategic objectives or goals to be met on all levels (Betto et al., 2022). This method of using the
balance scorecard can be helpful in other ways by helping to improve employee satisfaction,
levels of commitment and the climate within the health care organization. Balance scorecards are
helpful in that it provides a method of communication for the managers to convey the goals and
objectives of the health care organization, improvement in the manner that appraisals are
conducted in regards to goals that are accomplished or achieved and proper analyzation of the
objectives and benefits for success.
In this age or era as it relates to information technology, the method of business processes
requires a decision making tool that is both structured and effective when measuring or assessing

an organization so that it is able to develop and maintain a competitive edge or advantage.
Business environments in general require or need for organizations to choose the quality
initiative program that is best suited or designed for those goals which are appropriate and
provide an improved employee environment , increased satisfaction among customers,
shareholders and business partners. The balanced scorecard when properly implemented will also
help with cost, time, profits and the improvement of both service and product innovations. The
ability of a balance scorecard to align and guide the strategies of an organization and set them
into plans of action makes this particular tool or method for organizational success invaluable.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM), has stated or made it clear the primary purpose or function
of any health care organization, will be to lessen or decrease the burden of injury, disability or
illness while also improving the function and health status of other individuals. The (IOM) when
it comes to a balanced scorecard has suggested or designated at least six targeted aims or
objectives for improvement. They are effectiveness, safety, timelines, patient-centeredness,
equity and efficiency. These methods or steps are believed to help with reducing injury, illness,
and disabilities in order to improve the overall health and wellness of the population. The
balanced scorecard in many instances serves as the driving tool of any organization trying to
maintain quality, improve resources and obtain quality throughout the organization. Balance
scorecard results can be used to line up and prioritize the expectations of the customer, ensure
consistency with providers, record progress, increase patient participation for the purpose of
helping them to manage care for themselves.
Aside from the balance scorecard, the Analytic Hierarchy Process is another method or
procedure utilized by health care organizations or facilities. This process or method relies on or
uses human capital as a component of it’s metric tool. This method shows or illustrates how

individuals reach certain performance levels within the health care industry or setting. Despite
some hindrances to health care, it continues to be one the fastest growing industry leaders in the
United States. The professiona;s and providers within the area of health care are expected to
deliver quality services while keeping cost low and dealing with patient ratios, fast paced
changes in healthcare and ineffective information access. Metrics of the balance scorecard may
show or identify if the health care organization for the most part is capable of continuous change
and constant improvement which can be important when trying to measure or gauge the future
growth and advancement of the organization in general. When trying to implement measurement
system or method based on performance, the health care organization or facility must
comprehend the capability of not just meeting specific expectations of various shareholders, the
organization must also make a clear understanding of the progress needed and required by this
particular performance based system (Ginter et al., 2018).
The method or process utilized by health care organizations or facilities when creating a
balanced scorecard is based on identifying theoretical objectives that will provide answers and
information from four key perspectives of the customer, financial, learning and internal.
In my opinion, the balanced scorecard is unique method for the health care organization or
facility to measure and gauge it’s overall performance. By using this particular method, the
process for ensuring proper alignment of all targeted goals and mission values can only help to
enable the organization to grow and advance moving forward.
