Unit 4 Discussion Board
Systems In Healthcare
HCM632

The purpose of this unit 4 discussion assignment for this week will look at a specific group
or population facing challenges and barriers trying to gain access to quality healthcare here n the
United States. In many cases the inability to obtain or access quality healthcare can definitely
have a negative effect on health. Most adults who are not insured are more likely unable to
receive the proper and necessary preventive care to help with illnesses such as; cancer,
cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Furthermore, those children who are also without medical
coverage are in may cases less likely of not being able to also get the appropriate care or medical
treatment necessary for illnesses such as; asthma, immunizations, dental care and child wellness
visits that help to track and monitor developmental milestones (MacDonald & Tamnhe, 2018).
One specific population that faces such barriers and challenges are individuals and low
income families who are in need of quality healthcare. This particular population or group tends
to experience chronic illnesses and the inability to have or obtain the proper treatment or
diagnosis for recovery. This for the most part is due to the fact of not being able to have
resources such as transportation access, little to income and the necessary coverage needed to get
help or assistance from a provider or healthcare professional. This particular population also
suffers from possible substance abuse and depression due to a mindset of looking at each day as
struggle. These low income individuals or families consisted mostly of blacks and hispanics who
faced these challenges and barriers everyday. For the most part with healthcare cost on the rise,
proper and quality care became more and more unaffordable(MacDonald & Tamnhe, 2018).
When it comes to programs related to healthcare for those considered low income, local,
state and federal levels of government have managed develop and implement healthcare
programs designed and created for the purpose of helping the elderly, individuals with
disabilities, children , the homeless and of course those with little to no income as well.
The programs developed to assist these those in are Medicaid and Medicare. Medicaid helps to
assist those individuals who have little to no income, individuals with disabilities and children.
Medicare on the other hand is primarily designated for those 65 and over. Medicare takes on the
responsibility of providing transportation, covering the price of prescriptions, hospital stays,
clinical visits, vaccinations, routine healthcare and visits the emergency room. However,
Medicaid for the most part has a more expanded criteria for eligibility acceptance as opposed to
Medicare. This program covers vaccinations, testing, transportation costs, behavioral health
treatment, health care visits, medications and surgeries. Medicaid will also allow for the
converge cost of psychology appointments or visits, medical hospital and inpatient behavioral
stays. Oftentimes, local, state and federal governments will or may help with free healthcare
clinics in regions where population for those with low to no income is larger. In some cases there
are special grants given for financial assistance to help with medical costs and assistance.
Unfortunately, there are those regions or areas where health care resources are available for a
specific population or group, however there then lies the shortage of medical professional or
providers necessary to deliver those services to the community. This normally occurs or happens
in minority communities within the inner cities (De Queirós Ricardo & Marques, 2021).
With the shortage of healthcare providers and professionals decreasing more and more at an
incredible rate, all three levels of government need to consider to re-evaluate the process for
trying to help those in need of medical help and assistance.
