Research recent health care privacy breaches to determine what caused the leak or breach, what the penalties were, and how the facility “repaired” the damage to the patients that were impacted.
Novant Health was victim to security breach this past year in August that impacted 1,362,295 patients. They stated that a misconfiguration in Meta pixel code potentially led to the unauthorized disclosure of protected health information. There are claims that Mera was being improperly used on hundreds of hospital websites within patient portals.
Once Novant Health became aware that the pixel could have improperly transmitted information to Meta, it disabled and removed the pixel and launched an investigation. Novant Health later determined that it was possible that sensitive information was disclosed to Meta, depending on each user’s activity within the Novant Health website and patient portal.
Novant Health sent letters to all potentially impacted patients to be safe and transparent.
Novant Health has implemented additional structure, governance, and policies surrounding the use of pixels.
I have never been impacted by any type of breach in which my personal information was
exposed, however I have had my wallet stolen with my social security number , so I am always vigilant and make sure to check my credit score , and not give out to many identify personal information. I think if I were to have my personal information leaked, it would impact me significantly. Stealing one’s identity can ruin someone’s credit reputation effecting purchasing of
homes and automobiles.
