What are your initial thoughts after reviewing the AHRQ website? AHRQ created tools and strategies to help health systems and lead clinicians to deliver high-quality, safe, great value healthcare. Its data and analysis help healthcare decision producers understand how the US healthcare system works and where there are prospects for improvement. The agency for Healthcare Research and Quality backs research to increase the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans. Generally, it is a user-friendly website with a large amount of information and tools for healthcare professionals to use and retrieve for patients. (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2023). What are your roles and responsibilities related to healthcare literacy? APRN’s have a professional and ethical obligation to convey in a flawless, purposeful way that tackles the unique information needs of each patient. Evidence-based strategies that foster health literacy must be incorporated in every patient's plan of care and become part of the everyday practice of nursing. As a practitioner we need to use a universal precautions approach to the delivery of care to the patients as if each patient may have specific limited health literacy, whether they be language barriers, literacy, or education level. We must watch for the red flags of low literacy and omission paired communication between the provider and patient. (Health Literate Care Model, 2021). What are some practices you can use when providing patient care as you transition to the role of APRN? I can implement devices that were examined in healthcare literacy such as emphasis on the need to know or need to do. Explain what is wrong briefly, what the patient needs to do emphasizing why they would “need to know”. For example: If acquiring a new medication explain what the medication is, why they need to take it, how often, any side effects of the medication and when to seek medical assistance. Instruments that could be used are clearly written education materials: pamphlets, flyers, online tools, pictures, and teach backs. (Health Literate Care Model, 2021). Examples of what “need to do” are instructions and questions for just before the patient leaves the exam room to check out. Where do they go? Do they have any questions regarding the visit? New medications, self-care, referrals, follow ups or filling out forms? Being positive, hopeful, and empowering will inspire a better relationship with the provider and patient and lead to better adherence to the plan of patient care. (Health Literate Care Model, 2021). Additional practices when delivering patient care are use and access of the many tools on the AHRQ website. Tool kits such as Clinical decision making, clinical guidelines and recommendations, health literacy, and evidence-based practice research networks.
