Question 1

In your own words, explain the 4 lines of evidence Alfred Wegener presented to support
his continental drift hypothesis.
Your Answer:
1. The outline or fit of the continents. Wegener said that Africa and South America
looked as though they were once connected along the continental slope.
2. Unique fossils that matched up across the seas. Specifically, the mesosaurus, the
glossopetris, and the lystosaurus. All were found in Eastern South America, and South-
Western Africa. This suggests that the continents were once connected.
3. Rock types and mountain formations - The Appalachian mountains and the Caldonian
mountains match up and share the same rock type. In order for this to even be possible,
the continents had to be connected together at some point.
4. Similar ancient climates - Wegner found evidence of glacial activity in Southern
Africa, South America, Australia and India.
