Introduction Questio n # #1 On Lab 3 - Plate Tectonic Map (Google Slide), place a pair of arrows at your choice of one location for each of the following types of plate boundaries: Divergent, Convergent, and Transform. Place the arrows on either side of the boundary, using the arrows to indicate the direction of motion of each plate. A pair of green arrows have been placed at the divergent boundary between the Pacific and Antartic plates as an example. Complete the table below for each of your three (3) chosen plate boundary locations from #1. Plate Boundary Type Name the Plates on each side of your chosen boundaries What type of force ( tension, compression, shear) is the dominant force at this plate boundary? #2 Divergent Plate 1: Pacific tension Plate 2: Nazca #3 Convergent Plate 1: North American compression Plate 2: Juan De Fuca #4 Transform Plate 1: Nazca shear Plate 2: Antarctic #5 Which type of FORCE is responsible for the strongest earthquakes? Why? Compression is mostly seen in convergent plate boundaries which create the most earthquakes. #6 Which type of PLATE BOUNDARY has the highest risk for the largest volcanic eruptions? Why? Convergent plate boundaries because as the plate pushes down it causes magma to rise
SITE 1: Iceland (Vestmannaeyjar) #7 Which of the three types of plate boundaries is located where the Vestmannaeyjar volcanic system is being formed in east-central Iceland? Divergent #8 Place a star on Lab 3 - Plate Tectonic Map at the plate boundary location of SITE 1. Answer the following questions based on the materials found at the provided weblinks for SITE 1 Hazard Type Characteristics (size, depth, erupted products, distance of effect, population effected, etc.) #9 Earthquake characteristics (size/depth) Usually precedes eruptions. Impacts around 5000 people, no casualties. #10 Volcanism characteristics (erupted products) 30 x 40 km group of islands held some of the most noteable eruptions #11 Hazards to Humans (how are humans affected -- at what scale?) No casualties. People had to just be evacuated #12 The Bulletin Report about the January 1973 eruptions states that the eruption was preceeded by over 200 earthquakes. What was the magnitude of the largest of these earthquakes? The largest was a 2.6 on the Richter scale #13 Based on your understanding of what happens at this type of plate boundary location, what caused all the earthquakes? (note: it is NOT the eruption, because the earthquakes happened before the eruption) It seems like a divergent plate boundary. The plates are rupping apart SITE 2: Tonga (Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai)
#14 Which of the three types of plate boundaries is located where the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai submarine volcano is found? Convergent boundary #15 Place a star on Lab 3 - Plate Tectonic Map at the plate boundary location of SITE 2. Answer the following questions based on the materials found at the provided weblinks for SITE 2 Hazard Type Characteristics (size, depth, erupted products, distance of effect, population effected, etc.) #16 Earthquake characteristics (size/depth) I cant find anything about earthquakes at either two links. #17 Volcanism characteristics (erupted products) Sent ash, steam and gas into the air. Was a purely magmatic eruption #18 Hazards to Humans (how are humans affected -- at what scale?) Affected the 105,000 people. Smoke was in the air and thick layers of ash. Two people lost their homes and it could have (but did not) contaminate their water supply #19 Which eruption product had the most impact on the people nearest the eruption? December 2021. Four people were killed, 2 drowned. The tsunami waves were 66 feet tall; #20 Which eruption product had (or will have) the most impact on the people around the globe? Definitely the one on Jan 13, 2022, its second most powerful. It left a thick layer of ash all throughout the community and caused people to lose their homes. SITE 3: California (Ridgecrest)

#21 Which of the three types of plate boundaries is located in closest proximity to the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence? Transform #22 Place a star on Lab 3 - Plate Tectonic Map at the plate boundary location of SITE 3. Answer the following questions based on the materials found at the provided weblinks for SITE 3 Hazard Type Characteristics (size, depth, erupted products, distance of effect, population effected, etc.) #23 Earthquake characteristics (size/depth) M5+ earthquakes occur often. The largest was an M6.4. 10.5 km depth #24 Volcanism characteristics (erupted products) No volcanic activity #25 Hazards to Humans (how are humans affected -- at what scale?) affected around 47,000 people #26 The largest of the 2019 Ridgecrest sequence of earthquakes were magnitude 6.4 and 7.1. How far away were these felt? All the way In the china lake-ridgecrest area #27 Magnitude 6.4 and 7.1 earthquakes are quite strong. Why did these not cause considerable damage to humans? It happened away from people #28 Which of the three events you investigated in this lab do you think had the biggest impact on society? Why?
I feel like the San Andreas earthquakes were very impactful because it taught alot about earthquakes. #29 Based on your now expertise on the hazards associated with plate tectonics at plate boundaries, briefly describe what is scientifically inaccurate about the 1997 movie Volcano. (if you haven't seen this movie, you can read the synopsis at this link: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120461/) The conrete barrier used in the movie blocks the lava, but IRL, the lava would just go right through. They volcano produced way too much ash and the helicopters seemed invincible
