In this section, you will work on identifying igneous rocks based on the two primary characteristics: composition and texture . Composition describes the different types of minerals ( mineralogy ) within the individual rock. Texture describes the size of the individual crystals within the rock. You will need to use both composition and texture to identify each of the igneous rock samples. Follow the link below to the page entitled “Igneous Rock Identification” and read through the background information. Then, identify samples 1 through 12 following the instructions on the web page and enter the information into the table below.
