What is Geology?
Geology is the study of the Earth.
Provide at least three examples of other sciences that are integrated into the study of geology.
1.
Chemistry plays a crucial role in understanding the composition and properties of rocks, minerals, and fluids within the Earth’s crust.
2.
Physics is used in geophysics, which involves studying the Earth’s physical properties.
3.
Geobiology explores the interactions between geology and biology.
Why Study Earth?
1.
We should study the Earth to learn about resources such as soil, water, metals, industrial minerals, and energy and how to reasonably utilize these resources.
2.
We should use the study of rocks and fossils to see where they came from, how we have changed and how they have evolved.
1.3 Assignment: Why Study the Earth
3.
We should study the data on earthquakes, volcanoes, slope failures, and damaging storms and learn how we can prevent these disasters or minimize the damage.
4.
We should learn how and why Earth’s climate has changed in the past and use that knowledge to understand both natural and human-
caused climate change.
5.
By studying the Earth, we can see the effects we have on climate and the damage created by using resources and work towards creating a plan to combat these issues.
6.
We should use our knowledge of Earth to understand the universe and all the stars and planets.
(Panchuck & Earle, 2019)
Pick three reasons that you most identify with
1.
We should study the Earth to learn about resources such as soil, water, metals, industrial minerals, and energy and how to reasonably utilize these resources.
The reason you selected it.
I selected this reason because I work in an industry that utilizes natural resources to provide safe and reliable water and natural gas to citizens.
A description of why you think that reason is important.
The statement is crucial because studying the Earth’s resources, particularly natural gas, and water, is essential for sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
1.3 Assignment: Why Study the Earth
An example of how you think you can apply this knowledge in your life today.
My company has partnered with a renewable energy company that has created a process where they extract the methane from a trash-burning and run a process to clean the methane and create natural gas that can be utilized in our system.
Examples of Natural Gas
Consider using natural gas for heating and cooking as it’s a cleaner alternative to some other fossil fuels.
Support and investment in energy companies that prioritize responsible extraction and reduce methane emissions during natural gas production.
Advocate for policies and regulations that promote safe and sustainable natural gas practices.
Examples of water
Practice water conservation at home by fixing leaks, using low-flow fixtures, and reducing unnecessary water use.
Educate yourself about your local water source and quality to ensure safe consumption.
Participate in community efforts to clean up local water bodies and support organizations working toward water conservation.
2.
We should study the data on earthquakes, volcanoes, slope failures, and damaging storms and learn how we can prevent these disasters or minimize the damages.
The reason you selected it.
Natural disaster numbers are on the rise, we need to combat the causes and effects to make a difference.

1.3 Assignment: Why Study the Earth
A description of why you think that reason is important.
We have witnessed a rise in natural disasters. According to Gusner, “Natural disasters in the U.S. have increased significantly over the past few decades. Over the past five years, the U.S. has experienced an average of 18-billion-dollar climate disasters each year, up from 6.7 billion-dollar disasters per year in the 2000s” (2023). By studying the causes and effects of climate change and ways to combat this issue we can work towards a
positive change.
An example of why you think that reason is important.
You can reduce your carbon footprint by making conscious choices like using public transportation or carpooling instead of driving alone. Additionally, adopting energy-efficient practices at home, such as using LED bulbs and property insulating your home, can help lower your energy
consumption and minimize your impact on climate change.
