Sarah Heide GIS 341 Map Critique 1 8/21/23 As a result of the map below, viewers can see what major river floodplains are found in Puget Sound in Washington state and into Canada. At the source, the ecosystem is cited as a means of preventing natural disasters. The map can be used by a wide audience including the government, researchers, and the general public since it can be read by people with varying levels of experience. All aspects make sense in the context of who will be viewing the material and the chapter in which it resides. The floodplains are dominated by royal blue and surrounding areas are characterized by pastel shades of green, grey, tan, purple, blue, and pink. Topographic maps like this one do an excellent job of showing floodplains. There is a similar color scheme to those used on popular large earth maps, but they are not as effective in this one. In addition to the floodplains themselves, the areas where they live could stand out more from the surrounding area. The map would be easier to read if the important aspects of the map stood out more. The surrounding area around the rivers could be more vibrant, or a different color scheme entirely would be helpful as well. The labels are difficult to read and can be slightly moved and or enlarged for each specific river when the color scheme is present. Additionally, there seems to be no rhyme or reason for the listing of cities on the map as there are many along the coast, and it is unclear why those towns and cities were selected over other areas which might be flooded. Since the map is supposed to be illustrating the location of both potential issues and benefits to those who might be impacted, it would make more sense to use towns which are directly affected by flooding. Also, providing more information about the different shades of
shading around floodplains would be helpful in the legend. Overall, the title and description are clear, helpful, and do not pull focus. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/306324393_Decision_Tools_and_Approaches _to_Advance_Ecosystem Based_Disaster_Risk_Reduction_and_Climate_Change_Adaptation_in_the_Twenty- First_Century Whelchel, A.W., Beck, M.W.
