HOMEWORK # 7
–Greenhouse Gases and Rising Sea Level and their impact
Please WATCH the videos posted this week, and do some independent research if needed. Answer in
DETAIL
and in a
STRONG
PARAGRAPH
(5-6 Sentences), the following questions regarding Climate
Change, Rising Sea Levels, the Greenhouse Effect and Greenhouse Gases
1)
What is the difference between the Greenhouse effect and the
ENHANCED
Greenhouse effect?
How do
EACH
have an impact of the planet?
The Greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the earth in order to sustain life on earth. The
enhanced Greenhouse effect is caused by human activities. Emitting greenhouse gases trap heat in the
atmpsphere, causing global warming. The greenhouse effect gradually increases in Earth’s temperature.
The enhanced Greenhouse effect causes the planet to warm up faster, leading to more severe climate
change.

3 PHYSICAL IMPACTS
of rising sea levels
in some of the US' major coastal cities?
Rising sea levels can cause significant problems in coastal cities. As the sea level rises, it can lead to more
frequent and severe flooding, which can damage buildings, homes, and other infrastructure. Rising sea
levels can also lead to the erosion of beaches and other coastal areas, which can ruin ecosystems and
wildlife. The sea level rise can cause saltwater intrusion, which can contaminate freshwater sources and
can even more environmental damage. Rising sea levels causes severe storm surges, powerful storms are
already starting to happen here in the United States.
3)
According to the video,
Rising Sea Levels- Changing Planet
, in
DETAIL,
explain what
TWO
events
are causing sea levels to rise?
A warmer climate that is heating the ocean causing the volume of water to expand, and melting land-
based ice sheets and glaciers that are adding to the total amount of water in the oceans. Thermal
expansion occurs when the ocean absorbs heat from the atmosphere and warms up. As the water
warms, it expands and takes up
more space leading to a rise in sea levels. As the Earth’s temperature
rises, glaciers and ice sheets melt, and the water flows into the ocean, causing sea levels to rise.
4)
According to the video.
Rising Sea Levels- Changing Planet
,
Explain in
DETAIL
TWO
ways that
Arctic glaciers are melting?
The Arctic is one of the regions most affected by climate change, and rising temperatures are causing
glaciers to melt at an alarming rate. In addition to melting from above, caused by warmer temperature,
glaciers in the Arctic are also melting from below. This is due to warm ocean water, which is causing the
ice to melt faster that it can be replenished by snowfall. As the ice melts, it contributes to rising sea
levels.
5)
What impacts do Greenhouse gases have on:
biodiversity
,
species habitat
,
human health
, the
economy
? Give some
DETAILED
examples of
EACH.
Biodiversity
As temperatures rise due to increased greenhouse gas emissions, many species are struggling to adapt to
the changing climate. This can lead to a decrease in biodiversity as some species are unable to survive in
the new conditions. Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns can alter ecosystems and disrupt
food chains, which can have cascading effects on many species.
Species Habitat
Greenhouse gas emissions cause temperatures to rise causing species’ habitat to deteriorate. For
example, coral reefs are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, as rising temperatures
can cause coral bleaching and disrupt the delicate balance of the reed ecosystems.
Human Health
Increased greenhouse gas emissions leads to more frequent heatwaves which can cause heat
exhaustion, dehydration, and even death. Air pollution caused by fossil fuel emissions can lead to
respiratory problems such as asthma and lung cancer. Climate change can also increase the spread of
vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever, as well as foodborne illnesses.
The Economy
Temperatures rising due to increased greenhouse gas emissions can lead to more frequent and intense
natural disasters, such as hurricanes and floods, which can cause significant damage to infrastructure
and property. Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns can have negative effects on agriculture
and other industries, leading to decreased productivity and economic growth.
