ES 4 Online Education Roeder- SUMMER 2023 HOMEWORK #3- Nuclear Energy 1) According to the video, Nuclear Energy 101 , Nuclear Energy can be obtained by which TWO types of reactions? a) Nuclear fission is the process of spitting the nucleus of an atom into two smaller nuclei, releasing a large amount of energy in the procress. This process is used to power plants. b) Nuclear fusion is the process of combining two atomic nuclei inta a single, heavier nucleus. This process also releases a large amount of energy. It is the process that powers the sun and other stars. 2) According to the video, Nuclear 101, Nuclear Power Plants use which TYPE of nuclear reaction to create energy? Nuclear power plants use nuclear fission to create energy. 3) According to the video, Nuclear 101, what THREE FUEL SOURCES could be used to create Nuclear Energy? a) Uranium b) Plutonium c) Thorium 4) According to the video, Nuclear 101 , WHAT % of Global Electricity Generation is produced by Nuclear Power Plants? According to the video Nuclear 101, nuclear power plants generate approximately 11 % or the world’s electricity. 5) As communicated in the Video, Nuclear 101 , name FOUR ADVANTAGES of Nuclear Power and TWO DISADVANTAGES Advantages: a) Nuclear power plants emit very little greenhouse gases compared to fossil fuel plants. b) Nuclear power plants can produce a large amount of energy from a relatively small amount of fuel. c) Nuclear power can be easily integrated into electricity d) Nuclear energy’s cost to power is relatively low Disadvantages: a) Nuclear power plants produce radioactive waste that must be stored safely for thousands of years
b) Nuclear power plants can pose a risk to public safety if accidents occur, such as Chernobyl or Fukushima disasters. 6) Combining what you learned this week in the video, Nuclear 101 with what you learned in the WEEK 1 , list in order ( LEAST to MOST )- which of the following ENERGY SOURCES (Coal, Natural Gas, Oil and Nuclear Energy) emit the LEAST AMOUNT of Greenhouse Gases LEAST a) Nuclear Energy b) Natural gas c) oil d) coal MOST 7) According to LECTURE 4 - Nuclear Energy posted on the Canvas website this week, Nuclear Waste creates THREE problems . What are they? a) It generates radioactive wastes such as uranium b) Some materials can remain radioactive and hazardous to human health and the environment for thousands of years. c) large nuclear meltdowns in history released radioactive waste that had lasting negative impacts on the environment and surrounding communities which has made nuclear fission technologies very controversial. 8) According to the HOMEWORK SUPPORT ARTICLE - Does Nuclear Energy Effect the Environment , what TWO environmental issues are caused by Nuclear Power Plant cooling systems? a) The cooling system pulls water from oceans and rivers, fish get captured in the cooling system intake and die. b) After the water is used to cool the power plant it gets returned 25 degrees warmer than the water was originally, and the warmer water kills some species of fish and plant life. 9) According to lecture 4, there is a nuclear site in the Bay Area. Where is it located, and what type of nuclear materials does it contain? a) Where is it located? Livermore b) What type of nuclear materials does it contain? Plutonium and highly enriched uranium, and is housing CAT I and II SNM.
10) According to ARTICLE, the Economics of Nuclear Energy , what are the FOUR costs associated with building and operating a Nuclear Power Plant? Which represents the HIGHEST COST ? a) Capital costs-which include the cost of site preparation, construction, manufacture, commissioning, and financing of a nuclear power plant. b) Plant operating costs-which include the costs of fuel, operation and maintaince, and a provision for funding the costs of decommiossioning the plant and treating and disposing of used fuel and wastes. c) External costs d) Other costs such as system costs and nuclear-specific taxes Highest cost: Capital costs 11) Do some RESEARCH, WHICH COUNTRY IN THE WORLD , generates the MOST ENERGY from NUCLEAR POWER ? The U.S. generates the most energy from nuclear power. 12) Do some RESEARCH on YUCCA MOUNTAIN How is nuclear waste transported there? Nuclear waste was transported to Yucca Mountain by train or by trucks. What possible issues could be caused to humans and the environment during this process? During this process, a transportation accident could occur which can lead to the release of radioactive material, which could contaminate the surrounding area and potentially harm people and wildlife. How is nuclear waste stored once it gets there? Nuclear waste is stored in a deep geological repository located within the mountain. It is stored in containers made of materials that are resistant to corrosion and radiation damage. These containers are placed in tunnels that are excavated deep within the mountain.
