Assignment 11 – Global Climates
Activity 17.1A: Controls of Climate
1.
List the six major climate. Controls.
Latitude
altitude
pressure and wind
distance from the sea
ocean currents
topography
vegetation
prevailing winds
2.
Which climate control has the greatest influence on global temperatures?
Latitude. Seasonal changes in sun angle and length of daylight are determined by latitude and are the most influential on the temperature distribution
3.
Contrast continental and marine climates.
Maritime- climate are relatively mild of their latitude because the moderating effect of water produces summers that are warm but not hot and winters that are cool. Continental – climates are much more extreme with summers and winter
4.
Describe the connection between pressure systems and the world distribution of precipitation.
The seasonal shifting of the pressure belt which follows the movement of the sun’s vertical rays, significantly affects areas in immediate positions. The

latitudinal shifting of pressure belts is largely responsible for the seasonality of precipitation in many regions. 5.
Describe how a mountain system affects the distribution of precipitation on its windward side as compared to its leeward side.
As winds rise the windward side of a mountain range, the air cools and precipitation fall. On the other side of the range, the leeward side, the air is dry and it sinks. S there is very little precipitation on the leeward side of a mountain range.
6.
The contiguous 48 states are located in the midlatitudes, where the westerlies are the
dominant wind system. Should we expect a more pronounced marine climate along the west or east side of the continent? You would expect a more pronounced marine climate
7.
“Do low-latitude locations experience larger or smaller annual temperature ranges than high-latitude locations?” low latitude experience smaller annual temperature ranges compares to high latitude locations
8.
“Would you expect a warming or cooling effect from a poleward-moving (northward-moving in the Northern Hemisphere) ocean current in winter?”
You would expect a warming effect
9.
“Briefly describe the amount of precipitation that would be expected for locations under the influence of each of the following pressure and wind systems. (Refer to Figure 15.19.)
Equatorial low: high precipitation

Subtropical high: low precipitation
Subpolar low: high precipitation
Polar high: low precipitation
10. “Which one of the pressure zones listed in Question 9 is most influential in the middle latitudes?”
The sub-polar pressure zone

Global Climates
1.
“Would a place with a marine climate experience a lower or higher annual temperature range than a place at the same latitude that has a continental climate?”
A place with a marine climate would. Experience a lower annual temperature range than a place at the same latitude
2.
“What is a climograph?” used to track a locations basic climate
3.
“List some key words to describe the characteristics of each of the following Köppen climate groups.”
“A climates: tropical B climates: dry C climates: temperate
D climates: continental

E climates: polar 4.
“Indicate the name of the Köppen climate group best described by each of the following statements.
Vast areas of northern coniferous forests: moist continental mid latitude climates Smallest annual range of temperature: smallest annual range of temperature
Highest annual precipitation:
“Mean temperature of the warmest month is below 10°C: polar climates
The result of high elevation and mountain slope orientation: highland climates, temperature and amount of precipitation in highland depending on the elevation and orientation of the mountain slopes
Potential evaporation exceeds precipitation: dry climates

Very little change in monthly precipitation and temperature throughout the year:” humid tropical climates, monthly precipitation and temperature remains constant
