Syllabus Instructor Dr. Dean Bavington Email: Please communicate through Brightspace this semester: f5dlb@online.mun.ca Weekly Tutorials & Online Office hours: 10-10:50am or by appointment. Course Description Geography 1050 provides perspectives on some of the major geographical challenges and changes facing the contemporary globe in the age of the ‘Anthropocene’ and ‘Capitalocene’ including: climate and environmental change & justice, sustainability, economic industrial development, and population and migration. In all cases, the complexity of material-cultural systems is emphasized, as well as critical frameworks for understanding how any issue facing the world is neither purely natural nor purely cultural and is always unevenly distributed. Using the integrative skills of geographical analysis, the course prepares students for advanced study in geography and citizenship in the modern world. Land Acknowledgement We acknowledge that the lands on which Memorial University’s campuses are situated are in the traditional territories of diverse Indigenous groups, and we acknowledge with respect the diverse histories and cultures of the Beothuk, Mi’kmaq, Innu, and Inuit of this province. The Importance of Territory Acknowledgements They are a means of creating awareness of Indigenous presence and land rights in everyday life. According to many Indigenous scholars, including Mi’kmaw Professor Bonita Lawrence, decolonization begins with acknowledgment that there is “l and theft and dispossession. ” Land acknowledgements are a way to recognize the history of colonialism, and to remind us of the many involuntary sacrifices of Indigenous peoples in the creation and maintenance of settler spaces. Land acknowledgements disrupt settler colonialism and challenge the myth that the land was empty when settlers arrived. They are a reminder of the generosity of Indigenous peoples for sharing the land with visitors. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission defines reconciliation as being about “establishing and maintaining a mutually respectful relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in this country”. Establishing a respectful relationship starts with the act of acknowledging one another. Land acknowledgements when done with intention are a first step in addressing the legacy of colonialism. Course Format This online course is asynchronous (students and instructor are not online at the same time except during Firefox file:///Users/dr.bavington/Dropbox/My%20Mac%20(Drs-MacBook-Air .... 1 of 4 2023-09-10, 1:11 p.m.
recorded tutorials), but the schedule progresses every week and there are weekly due dates. The Getting Started unit in Course content gives you some ideas of how to manage this format. Course communication The professor will communicate with the class primarily via Announcements. Please make sure your notifications are turned on for BrightSpace . There is also an FAQ of common questions . If your question isn't answered there, use the Discussion forum for anything that may also be impacting other students. For other inquiries, including requests for extra extensions, email the professor in Brightspace f5dlb@online.mun.ca Office hours The discussion forums are optional. They are an asynchronous equivalent to the real-time weekly recorded tutorials: they're there for sharing, asking questions, getting deeper into materials, and helping one another. I will be monitoring the discussion forums regularly to answer questions that come up. If you are unable to have your questions answered on the discussion forum or at the weekly recorded tutorial or through Brightspace email than we can arrange an office hour visit on Webex. Evaluation There are no exams for this course. Rather, there are weekly assignments and a final major assignment . ! Weekly Assignments (10 x 6.5% each): 65% of the total grade # The CREW assignments for each unit are graded on a points system. They are listed as quizzes in the Assessment menu . # The Cornell Notes skill assignment is graded as fail/incomplete (0%), pass (50%), good (75%), or exceptional (100%) and will be used on the final major assignment. ! Final major assignment: 35% of total grade. # The final assignment will allow you to create your own arguments around course concepts using the CREW method, apply and support your arguments using evidence from Cornell Notes, and will involve a self-assessment of the course to help improve this course for future students. None of the regular quizzes or assignments are timed. Spelling and grammar errors do not reduce grades. A lack of proper citations, referencing, and quoting will reduce your grade-- the first unit teaches you how to do this. Usually, quizzes and assignments are due at noon the following Monday after the unit starts. All students get an automatic one-week extension on all quizzes and assignments. You get this automatically and do not have to request it. After one week, you can ask for additional extensions by emailing the professor, who will tell you the extension date. Please be careful about having your work pile up with too many extensions as the course builds on previous concepts. Students need never provide a reason for an absence or extension (it's none of the professor's business--you are adults and have your lives). Please do not email the professor about your private medical information! No newly submitted assignments or quizzes will be accepted after answers are posted; you will never have gotten a valid extension that goes past when answers are posted. There is no attendance tracking, though Brightspace does log when and for how long you are in the shell (creepy). Required Readings and Text There is no required text for the course. Links to all readings, videos, and other sources are provided in this Brightspace course site. Cite, Don’t Plagiarize! Last semester, we had 12 pairs of plagiarism interventions in this course. That's 24 students out of 120, or 20% of the entire class. Most of them didn't realize they were committing academic misconduct. A few totally did. Please read the below. Plagiarism is the act of presenting the ideas or works of another as one’s own, including: ! sharing or workshopping answers among students through collaboration ! using classmate’s ideas or your mom’s brilliance without citing them ! using Generative AI (like ChatGPT) without citing your use or when specifically asked for your own answers/reflections. ! copying and pasting from course material without citing or using quotations You can--and should!-- absolutely use these sources. You just have to cite them. If you plagiarize, the following happens in this course: ! You will get an email from the Head of Geography to have a meeting to discuss the issue. ! After the meeting the Head will make a recommendation to the instructor about what sanctions to put in place. Last semester, these included: # A talk about what plagiarism entails # A 0 on the assignment # A reduction of 50% on the assignment # Redoing the assignment with new questions # Passing the course requires passing a test on plagiarism # The final prompts are chosen for you so they are not the same as the person you plagiarized with/from # The Head emails the Head of your department (major) to discuss the issue # While never done, getting a 0 for the course was discussed In the faculty of HSS, if someone is suspected of plagiarizing on an assignment worth 40% of your grade or more (impossible in this course), it automatically goes to a council of professors in the Dean's office. Here is the definition and statement on plagiarism from HSS: “Plagiarism is the act of presen3ng the ideas or work(s) of another person (or of any genAI tool) as one’s own. This applies to all material such as essays, laboratory assignments, laboratory reports, work term reports, design projects, seminar presenta3ons, sta3s3cal data, computer programs, research results, and theses. The properly acknowledged use of sources (including genAI tools) is an accepted and important part of scholarship. However, if you don't have a documented disability but life is making the course difficult, please reach out. There is a unit in Welcome week on how to fail gracefully/manage university in tight places that also has tips and tricks for surviving these times. University blurb: Memorial University of Newfoundland is committed to ensuring an environment of understanding and respect for the dignity and worth of each student and also to supporting inclusive education based on the principles of equity, accessibility and collaboration. Please do not hesitate to explore the various accommodations available through the University if you believe they may be beneficial. For more information on Memorial University’s commitment to accommodations of students with disabilities, see the policy document and view Memorial's Accessibility page that provides links to Web content accessibility guidelines, Campus Physical Accessibility guide and the Glen Roy Blundon Center that supports all students who experience barriers to accessing post-secondary education. * I recommend downloading the syllabi for all your classes. This is because syllabi are binding. A professor cannot change the grading scheme, late policy, attendance policy, or other things that impact your grade from the original syllabus during a course. They can update readings, the schedule, and other things that can mitigate course disruption. The only way you can prove something was changed is to have the original.
