GEOG2400: INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABLE CITIES MODULE 5 WORKSHEET TOTAL POINTS: 75 SECTION 1: RIGHT TO THE CITY 1. Summarize the Right to the City according to David Harvey in his piece of the same name (10 points). David Harvey described the Right to the City as a means of changing individuals by changing the city. This change depends on the exercise of a collective power to reshape the process of urbanization. Harvey expresses that the kind of city individuals want it cannot be separated from social ties, relationship to nature, lifestyles, technologies, and aesthetic values they desire. All of these must be taken into consideration and not be worked separately. Harvey makes it a point to acknowledge the ability to make and remake the cities we live in is so precious but also neglected of our human rights. 2. Explain the relationship between cities and social values based on the Right to the City article (10 points). The relationship between cities and social values based on the Right to the City article is that there cannot be any separation to any kind of social ties, relationship to nature, lifestyle and technologies as previously mentioned above. Sociologist Robert Park says, making a city without a clear sense of the nature of his task, results in him remaking himself because creating and rebuilding a city requires a lot of a person and without clear goals and visions it can get lost throughout the creation of a city. The article expresses how important it is to have social values aligned with future city goals to fully the remade city. 1
SECTION 2: SEGREGATION Race and Ethnicity in the US by Dot Density (Census 2020) (arcgis.com) 1. Use the website link above to identify a place of interest to you and take a screenshot of the racial composition. Do some research on the income, health outcomes, environmental quality, and school quality of the location, and write a short summary about the relationship between racial composition and the quality of life indicators mentioned above.  Upload a screenshot of the racial composition along with this worksheet. (25 points) I chose to look up the racial composition of my city and I was surprised to see the various races that make up my city. I see that Worcester is primarily made up of Hispanic or Latino, White, African American, and a population of two or more races not Hispanic or Latino. I agree with the consensus. Worcester being the second largest city in Massachusetts gives the residents living there great opportunities to make good money. I would have to say everyone in my family makes good money, thankfully. Now there are certain neighborhoods in Worcester that are worse than others and do not make great money. In recent years there have been amenities put in place that have increased the cost of living in Worcester exponentially. Additionally, health outcomes are scored a 70 on the us news website for access to health care, healthy behaviors, health conditions, mental health, and resulting health outcomes within communities. Umass memorial Hospital is very well known in Worcester and it attribute’s to a lot of Worcester success and residential living rate. Finally, the cities amenities, educational priorities, and technological advances have improved the racial composition and the quality of life in many Worcester residents homes, jobs, and families. 2

SECTION 3: GENTRIFICATION 1. Define the concept of gentrification and the specific case of green gentrification and consider what can be done to avoid existing residents from being displaced when neighborhood quality improves (10 points). Gentrification is a process of neighborhood changes that includes economic change in a historically disinvested neighborhoods by means of real estate investment and new higher- income residents moving in, as well as demographic change in terms of educational level and racial make-up of residents. Gentrification is based on three key factors: historic conditions, investment policy decisions, and community impacts. Prevention of white lighting and red lining will help existing residents avoid being displaced when neighborhood quality improves. SECTION 4: ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE 1. Explain how EJ and segregation interrelate. (10 points) Environmental justice describes the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, origin, and income as it relates to development and environmental laws. Segregation is the action of setting someone or something apart from others. Environmental justice and segregation interrelate when social disparity occurs as an area is exposed to environments hazards and other neighborhoods are treated better than others. Some cities are sustainable at the expense of others creating environmental injustices. If everyone was considerate of the environmental affects harm cities prevent segregation that facilitates environmental injustice. 2. Summarize the Flint water crisis and to local, regional, and federal government response to it (10 points). The Flint water crises exposed large amounts of lead in the water effecting the people in the surrounding area for decades to come. Local solution to combat the Flint water crisis was to change resources of water by using water from the Flint River rather than buy water from Detroit. Despite the complaints of residents, the city had done tests on the water determining it was safe even though it was still murky brown. An outside 4
investigation needed to happen for that state to take the high levels of lead in the water serious in 2016 after the changes that had been done years prior. In October 2015 the government bought water filters for their citizens and switched back to water from Detroit. Kids under five in the most affected areas of Flint had 6.3% high blood lead levels. All over a state’s efforts to save money, unfortunately the residents of Flint experience damaging health complications and the city is far from recovering over the Flint water crisis. 5
