LAB TITLE:
LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE
NAME:
Brandy Mingus
DATE:
9 JAN 24
INTRODUCTION
This exercise is a review of the standardized coordinate system used throughout the world for
centuries; Latitude and Longitude. For this lab you can use either Google Maps or google earth
PROCEDURES AND DATA COLLECTION
I completed the following table showing the approximate latitude and longitude of the following locations. Enter the location name into the query bar of Google Earth (or Google Maps), then record the latitude/longitude displayed for each site.
PRESENTATION OF THE DATA
Insert the table or graph you created from the data you collected in the lab.

QUESTIONS
1.
What is the angular distance (number of degrees) from the South Pole to the North Pole?
2.
What is the angular distance (number of degrees) from the Equator to the South Pole?
3.
What is the angular distance (number of degrees) from the Equator to the North Pole?
4.
At what latitude is the Tropic of Cancer and what is its significance?
5.
At what latitude is the Tropic of Capricorn and what is its significance?
6.
At what latitude is the Arctic Circle and what is its significance?
7.
At what latitude is the Antarctic Circle and what is its significance?
1. The angular distance from the South Pole to the North Pole is 180 degrees.
2. The angular distance from the Equator to the South Pole is 90 degrees.
3. The angular distance from the Equator to the North Pole is also 90 degrees.
4. The Tropic of Cancer is located at approximately 23.5 degrees north latitude. Its significance lies in marking the northernmost point where the Sun appears directly overhead during the summer solstice.
5. The Tropic of Capricorn is situated at approximately 23.5 degrees south latitude. Its significance is in marking the southernmost point where the Sun appears directly overhead during the summer solstice.
6. The Arctic Circle is located at approximately 66.5 degrees north latitude. Its significance is that during the winter solstice, areas within the Arctic Circle experience a period of continuous darkness, while during the summer solstice, they have a period of continuous daylight.
7. The Antarctic Circle is situated at approximately 66.5 degrees south latitude. Its significance is
similar to the Arctic Circle, marking the southernmost point where areas within the circle experience continuous daylight during the summer solstice and continuous darkness during the winter solstice.
CONCLUSION
Because of this lab, the concept that latitude is the distance north or south of the equator, while longitude is the distance east or west of the prime meridian has been reinforced. The course also provided a better understanding of how the Earth's coordinate system is used for navigation and global location.
My understanding of latitude and longitude might be further enhanced by exploring real-world applications of these coordinates, such as navigation systems, GPS technology, or understanding the impact of these coordinates on weather and daylight variations. Additionally, hands-on experiences with mapping tools and software could deepen the knowledge of geographic coordinates and their role in various fields.
Overall, reflecting on what I've learned, identifying areas for further exploration, and applying the concepts in practical scenarios can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of longitude and latitude.
