From: dstaj022@uottawa.ca Date: March 11, 2021 Subject: Proposals for Preparing for Disaster Hello Jim Seay, Proposing a project solution to disastrous climate events As you know, I am proposing a project solution to disastrous climate events. The main goal of this project would be to stay ready for any event that can occur, rather than preparing as it happens. I would like to implement a climate-related response plan where all employees are ensured safety and company products are stable. We need to locate the problem and tackle a solution before it's too late. We have seen what has happened to P.G. & E while they have lost millions due to their lack of preparation. We want to save the company millions of dollars and keep our employees, products and company safe and sound. This can be executed through the following ways, starting with creating a way to protect assets. For example if a hurricane were to hit, we would implement flood barriers along with other flooding precautions. In addition, we would start strategically planning where to locate our products to further protect and ensure they are in areas with low risk of being affected by climate change disaster. Lastly, outsourcing would be a key component. With always having the risk of an unexpected disaster at hand, outsourcing and having a way for customers to purchase our products through the online store. If a store were to close down due to a climate-related disaster, it could remain profitable by depending on a company that could deal with the logistical side involved with handling customers who purchase from the website. How can we stay ready instead of getting ready? Annotated Bibliography Williams, T. (2009). Climate change adaptation. Library of Parliament. Williams' work presents an in-depth analysis of the adaptation the world would have to implement with the severity of climate change getting worse every day. The point of his writing is to inform us readers on how serious this crisis is and to further enrich our understanding on how things could turn out one day due to climate change. Williams’ does a fantastic job at emphasizing how severe and scary the world could be more than other sources without demonstrating bias and providing clear reliable information. Through his piece, seeing the struggles of the future with adaptation gave myself some ideas to present to my boss on how to help our company cope and adapt to the future problems we may have to face as a company. I can use this source for my research as a way to solve the issues that may arise by being prepared for the worst and trying to find solutions to these events for my company. Sarkar, S. (2018). Marine Algal Bloom Characteristics, Causes and Climate Change Impacts. Springer. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-981-10-8261-0 Sakar summarizes the impacts of climate change effectively while stating facts to scare the truth into the readers minds. While covering all to do with climate change, Sakar states that the 20 warmest years on record have been in the past 22 years. The point Sarkar is trying to make is that climate change has been increasingly getting worse and is on pace to continue and furthermore ruin the planet. Sakar is trying to get the message across about the implications in the future that climate change has and how impactful it truly is. This piece is different then other sources because Sakar implemented facts as a way of conveying her message across to the readers which was a way of scaring us into waking up and taking in what she is really saying. This source was helpful to me because with this information on what to expect, it bettered my understanding for exactly what to prepare for to aid myself and the company for what's to come. Mastrandrea, M., & Schneider, S. (2010). Preparing for climate change. MIT Press. Mastrandrea glorifies the main point of the piece as ways to prepare for the disastrous events that could occur from climate change. She covers everything that has to do with preparation including how to handle heat when the earth becomes so warm we can’t stand anymore, adapting your property and home and how to keep it safe and yourself safe inside etc. This piece is different compared to other sources due to the fact that the author addresses how to specifically adapt and prepare for what is to come, rather than just stating the severity of climate change and
its impacts. This information is not the most reliable because it has not been tested yet because we don't quite know exactly how bad it could end up being and if the things she's saying to prepare actually work. This source was highly informative and helpful in my work because it was a good start to the brainstorming process of how I could further improve and implement similar ideas to help the company. McKinnon, C. (2012). Climate change and future justice : precaution, compensation, and triage. Routledge. https://doi.org/10.4324/9780203802205 Mckinnon does a tremendous job of explaining each aspect in detail when it comes to the topics discussed in precaution, compensation and triage. The point of this piece is to further enrich the understanding of the reader's knowledge on climate change and all things related. With the several topics discussed Mckinnon does a good job compared to the other sources in a way that the topics are discussed more in depth as there are also many important topics discussed which were not in other sources. The objective was created without bias and the information is reliable. This source changed the way I think about my topic in a way that I have a deeper understanding of all the aspects of climate change effects and if I were to try to develop a solution for when the time comes for the company, I would have a better idea of what to aim for, what to avoid and other things due to my knowledge.
