Compare the advantages and disadvantages of using a Dutch Auction to a traditional underwriting method for an IPO.
A Dutch Auction is an IPO in which the price starts high and decreases until there are enough bids to sell all the shares. Advantages include price transparency and the potential for a fair market price. On the other hand, a traditional underwriting method involves a fixed price set by investment banks, providing certainty but potentially leading to an overpriced offering. (Block et
al., 2022).
Identify one real-life IPO that occurred in 2020. Try to select a company that a fellow student has not already selected
In 2020, Palantir Technologies Inc. conducted its initial public offering (IPO), marking a significant event in the financial landscape. Palantir, recognized as a data analytics software company, specializes in supporting government agencies and large enterprises in analyzing and interpreting their data. The IPO occurred on September 30, 2020, and its distinctive direct listing approach set Palantir's offering apart. This method allowed existing shareholders to sell their shares directly to the public, bypassing the involvement of traditional underwriters in the pricing process. The direct listing approach provided an alternative perspective to conventional IPOs and
garnered substantial attention within the financial markets (Levy, 2020).
For this one IPO, determine the initial price, the stock price at the end of the first day of trading, the stock price at the end of 10 days of trading, and the stock price at the end of 30
days of trading.
On September 30, 2020, Palantir Technologies Inc. commenced trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The initial price for each share was set at $10.0. The closing price at the end of the first day of trading was $9.50, representing a 31% increase above the reference price of $7.25, as reported by O'Brien in 2020. As data from YahooFinance (2023) indicated, Palantir's stock prices closed at $9.47 after ten trading days and $14.00 after 30 days. This trajectory provides insights into the company's stock performance in the initial days following its IPO.
State the following in your post: The total amount of the offering, the number of shares offered, the underwriter, and the fees for the IPO
As reported by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (2020), Palantir's total offering amounted to $100 million, with registration fees totaling $12,980. On the first trading day, Palantir made 475.8 million shares available, as Levy (2020) noted. Additionally, the adviser fees for Palantir amounted to $38.3 million, representing a fraction of the fees typically charged by underwriters in larger IPOs, according to Farrell (2020).
Evaluate the success of this IPO from the perspective of the issuer, the underwriter, and investors.
Looking at Palantir from the issuer's standpoint reveals a concerning financial picture. As indicated by Mergent Online (n.d.), Palantir has consistently shown negative price-to-earnings
(P/E) and return on investment (ROI) ratios. These metrics suggest that the company has suffered a financial loss in the last three fiscal years since its IPO. This financial distress is a significant consideration for investors, highlighting Palantir's challenges regarding profitability and returns on investment (Investopedia Team, 2020; Fernando, 2023).

Mark thinks that there is an interesting paradox of the efficient market hypothesis. If the market believes that prices reflect all information, investors will stop seeking mispriced securities. This may lead to more mispriced stocks and more inefficiency. However, if the market believes that inefficiency still exists, the competition of trying to be the first to find mispriced securities will make markets more efficient. Do you agree with Mark? Why or why not? Please briefly comment.

Jeffrey Bruner, CFA, uses the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) to help identify mispriced securities. A consultant suggests Bruner use arbitrage pricing theory (APT) instead. In comparing CAPM and APT, the consultant makes the following arguments:a. Both the CAPM and APT require a mean-variance efficient market portfolio.b. Neither the CAPM nor the APT assumes normally distributed security returns.c. The CAPM assumes that one specific factor explains security returns but APT does not.State whether each of the consultant’s arguments is correct or incorrect. Indicate, for each incorrect argument, why the argument is incorrect.

NYSE is the best-known example of a dealer market.

Brokers’ extensive contacts provide them with a pool of price information that individual investors could easily duplicate themselves, and hence not really value adding.

1. According to the efficient market hypothesis (EMH), in a perfect market, the security
prices reflect the true and fair value of all the underlying securities' assets at any time.
On the contrary, an inefficient market is a market whose security price at any time does
not entirely reflect the value of its assets. In this form of market, traders can beat the
market because they can employ strategies like arbitrage and speculation.
Explain with example, the price reactions towards the bad news that indicate market
is inefficient.

The efficient markets hypothesis identifies three forms of market efficiency.
(a) You observed that high-level managers make superior returns on investments in their company’s stock. Would this be a violation of weak-form market efficiency? Would it be a violation of strong-form market efficiency?
(b) If the weak form of the efficient market hypothesis is valid, must the strong form also hold? Conversely, does strong form efficiency imply weak form efficiency?
(c) Stock XYZ, which traded for several months at a price of K72, and then declines to K65. if the stock eventually begins to increase in price, K72 is considered a resistance level because investors who bought originally at K72 will be eager to sell their shares as soon as they can break even on their investment. If everyone in the market believes in resistance levels, why do these beliefs not become self-fulfilling prophecies?

Regarding Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), which of the following statements is TRUE?
Investors in the market are assumed to be rational and own private information.
If the semi-strong form of EMH is true, all information contained in the history of past prices has been reflected by the current price.
If the semi-strong form of EMH is true, you cannot beat the market by trading on private information.
Post-earnings announcement drift is consistent with the semi-strong form of EMH.
