Brady 1 Nadia L Brady ENG 300 Prof. Adam Meehan 4 Feb. 2024 4-1 Journal: Finding Meaning in Culture “The Yellow Wallpaper: A Cultural Studies and New Historicist Analysis When we analyze Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" through the lens of New Historicism, we can understand how the story is shaped by the historical context of the 19th century. New Historicism is a literary theory that highlights the interconnection between literature and history. It views texts as products of their time, reflecting the socio-political environment in which they were written. In the story, the protagonist's confinement to a room and her subsequent descent into madness can be seen as a reflection of the restrictive gender norms and oppressive societal expectations that were prevalent during Gilman's era. A New Historicist analysis of "The Yellow Wallpaper" reveals how the story critiques the patriarchal system that oppressed women in the late 1800s. The wallpaper in the story symbolizes the suffocating constraints imposed on women in a male-dominated society. This reflects the struggle for agency and autonomy that many women faced during that period. By examining the intersection of literature, history, and culture, the story offers commentary on the complexities of gender dynamics and power structures in the late 19th century.
