Running Head: REFLECTION ON THE HIGH PRICE OF MULTITASKING 1 Reflection On The High Price Of Multitasking Sara L. Fineout Southern New Hampshire University Eng-122 T3800 English Composition 1 Mary Boyle March 19, 2024
REFLECTION ON THE HIGH PRICE OF MULTITASKING 2 Reflection On The High Price Of Multitasking I am analyzing the article “The High Price of Multitasking” By Daniel T. Willingham. The context of this article is that no matter the circumstances, multitasking can be dangerous. Daniel’s purpose for writing this article is to inform his audience of the dangers of multitasking, whether it is intentional or not. The author mentions that other than texting and driving, even talking to someone or listening to music are also forms of multitasking. The author has a serious tone with an expository style of writing. I have learned that not everyone purposely multitasks. If you are texting and driving, then you are multitasking purposely, but if you are just listening to music while you are driving, you are also multitasking because that causes your mind to focus on the road and the music, which could cause you to have problems concentrating on driving. I believe that a closer analysis of the author’s claim and writing structure will help me learn more about my selected reading because it will give me a deeper understanding of what Daniel is trying to portray in this article. Reading this article a few more times could help me find any additional purposes the author might be trying to portray in this article. Daniel mentions the fact that smartphones give us access to multiple forms of multitasking, as well as the fact that some places have banned crossing a street or biking while texting (Willingham, 2019). That information helps us to better understand how dangerous multitasking, especially texting and driving, can be. I believe that the article effectively achieves its purpose. The reason I believe this is that he backs up a lot of his claims with research articles and studies. Willingham also gives us reasons why people do multitask, which could help the reader recognize their own reason for multitasking as it helped me see my own. I tend to listen to music a lot while doing other things like studying but this article has me rethinking that process.
