Week 4 Assignment 2
Assignment 4
When working in the medical field you are faced with many decisions resulting in patient care. Sometimes conditions arise when you must make a decision that doesn’t stick right with you and your views but are right for the patient to receive the best level of care. You cannot let your own personal beliefs and views interfere with a patient care that has different beliefs. Yet, this isn’t always practical. Euthanasia, the Greek meaning for “good death.” According to Santa Clara University euthanasia
mea
ns, "the act of ending the life of a person suffering from either a terminal illness, or an incurable disease." The American Medical Association are against physicians assisting in euthanasia. Say a terminally ill patient is going to pass away within a short period of time. Veracity is our responsibility to tell the patient the truth no matter how hard it may be. The patient may be in a lot of pain, and request a physician assisted euthanasia. A patient’s autonomy is their right and freedom to make medical decisions regarding their own health without being coerced. Yet, we cannot fall out of practice. Euthanasia is illegal in most states, and the AMA is against medical assisted euthanasia.
So, this would not be an extension of the patient’s autonomy. Unless this patient resides and is being cared for in a state in which euthanasia is legal. There are other ways to help make the patient as comfortable as possible until the end.
Week 4 Assignment 3
If this was my patient I would explain other options of care for them. This is because in the state I live in euthanasia is illegal and I do not agree with it. Many patients are truly misdiagnosed every day. I would give the best options for the highest level of care to insure the patient has
the most comfortable experience until the end. The patient has every right to be involved in their own level of care. Yet, they cannot choose to have you assist in their own euthanasia. I also would not pass this patient off to another physician to help assist the patient. I took on this patient and will not forced them to be treated but also not assist in their death before their time. It is highly important for us a physician to help the patient understand what is happening and make them aware of all the possible outcomes. Many people have been diagnosed with cancer given months to live and have lived for many years past that. I would feel terrible to assist in euthanasia when the patient has the possibility to live for longer than expected.
It is very important as people in the medical field to stay morally and ethically motivated. Some patients do not share the same views as you, and that is ok. You must make sure your patients are receiving the best level of care without your own views getting in the way. If you follow the code of conduct you are helping one patient at a time.
