ENG-123 MODULE 1-7 ISSUE TO PERSUASION 2
The two topics that come to mind for me are ADHD and Prisoners and mental illnesses. There are so many topics I can think of, but these are the main two I am mostly interested in and kind of familiar with due to life experiences. I was looking on the CQPress website provided and
found an interesting article for each topic. My children and I along with other friends and family members have ADHD so that is why I picked that topic. For the topic of Prisoners with mental illnesses, I picked that because I know some friends and family including my soon-to-be ex-
husband and my boyfriend that has been locked up or are currently locked up and suffer from some mental illnesses which have gotten worse from being locked up. The first topic ADHD one side is that it is a mental illness and a problem with the way the brain processes impulses etc. the other side of the argument is that it is a lack of discipline and a result of spoiled children. I have heard a million times that there is no such thing as ADHD
that it is a lack of discipline and that back in the day we would have got it whooped out of us. Nowadays however there is more research done on the subject and the brain and the way it functions and what causes certain things. A lot of studies are still being done to be able to improve the medication and treatment of ADHD. There is still a lot that is unknown about ADHD and the way it is presented in individuals which is why so many still argue if it is a mental disability or not. As for the topic of Prisoners and mental illnesses one side that can be argued is that locking someone up with mental illnesses is cruel and they will fare better by more counseling and less being locked away. The other side to that argument is that even though they have mental
illnesses they still did the crime and need to do the time. While it can also be argued that those are the same they are different in their own ways. The argument for more counseling suggests

that they will be worse off by being imprisoned more while the other argues the point of don’t do
the crimes if you don’t want to do the time. For topic one ADHD I would argue the side that it is in fact a mental illness and not just a
lack of discipline. As a mother of 4 boys with ADHD and someone who has ADHD, I fully agree
it is a mental disability. This is one of the things that got me interested in psychology and being able to understand more of the way the brain work and how different things can affect our brain and development etc. With the second topic of Prisoners and mental illnesses, I would argue that they need more counseling and or rehab and things like that. The reason for that argument is that I have seen people with some mental illnesses be locked up and come out with even more mental
problems. I have also seen someone with little to no mental problems be locked up and come out with PTSD and other mental health problems as a result of being locked up. The Way that these topics and arguments would relate to my field of study and the field I hope to get into which is psychology is that they have to do with the brain and the way the brain works and have to do with counseling which is what I want to get into after I graduate from SNHU. I believe that these topics would be of interest to pretty much anyone in the psychology field as they deal with abnormalities and the different ways that the brain develops and or processes things, They also have to do with the DNA and genetic part of psychology and would also be an option in a lot of the criminal justice field I am minoring in as it seems mental illnesses and ADHD go hand in hand with problems with the law. I personally think we need more counseling and resources for mental health and less prisons.
