Your name: Sora North Question: Should texting and driving result in mandatory jail time? Thesis: If texting and driving resulted in mandatory jail time, it would greatly increase the quality of life for people who drive, by making people drive safely, making people more responsible and making people feel more comfortable when driving. Subtopic One It would make people drive more safely. Subtopic Two Turn people into responsible drivers. Subtopic Three Allow drivers to feel safe when they drive. Subtopic One: If texting and driving resulted in mandatory jail time, it would make people drive more safely. Example More people would stop texting and driving because they understand the consequences. A fine isn't a big enough punishment to stop texting while driving Explanation If jail time was mandatory for driving and texting people would be scared of going to jail and having to go to court rather than a simple fine. The minimum fine in Ontario for texting and driving is 615$ and the maximum is 3000$. Although 3000$ is a lot, it is not a big enough consequence for people to stop. If the consequence was jail time, people would stop and question themselves if it would be worth it to look at their phones. Subtopic Two: If texting and driving resulted in jail time, there would be more responsible drivers. Example There would be more drivers that are responsible because they would follow the rules. More responsible drivers would lead to less accidents Explanation If there was mandatory jail time there would be more drivers that would follow the rules which would lead to less car accidents. “The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year” (“Texting And Driving Accident Statistics”). This number could be significantly reduced if there were mandatory jail time. Subtopic Three: If texting and driving resulted in jail time, it would allow drivers to feel more safe. Example If texting and driving resulted in jail time, it would allow drivers to feel more safe knowing that there is a less chance of them getting in an accident. Explanation If there were less people who text and drive, we would all have a much better chance of getting home to our families without getting into an accident. Jail time would allow everyone to be more relaxed and feel safe when they drive. List three or more methods of proof and three or more persuasive techniques that you will use in this essay.
