Name ___Jalen Curry___________________________ Chapter 8 Chapter 8 STC Reflection Directions: For each content module, you will complete ONE reflection on the texts and the lecture. Follow the format below. Each weekly reflection is worth 5 points. STC self-reflections are graded for completion. In order to be considered complete, students must complete every section of the chart. Questions at the bottom of the STC self-reflection require a minimum of two-three complete sentences to be considered complete. Define each term in your own words. Then give an example how the term/ concept may be applied in an educational setting. Term/ Concept Definition Example for Application adaptive behavior Real life skills that help a student function independently everyday such as getting dresses and food safety. A student learning how to brush their teeth by themselves without assistance. generalization The ability to use a skill learned from another environment/task and apply it to a new and different environment/task. A student learns how to zip their jacket. Then applies this skill to other tasks. So now the student can zip their bookbag, suitcase, sleeping bag, tent, etc. applied academic skill The ability to apply and make the connection between academic skills such as writing and math and apply it then to practical life use. A student learns to write their first and last name in school. Then out in the real world, the student is able to apply those writing skills to do real world task like sign their name. community-based instruction Instruction based to promote learning social and developmental work skills with the community with real life experiences. It’s a hands-on learning opportunity A student gains instruction putting objects into bags and then on a community trip to the grocery store. The student utilizes this skill in the community by placing grocery items into grocery bags with the intent of later in life being able to gain employment as a bagger.

The teacher knows John works best with kinesthetic learning and being offered breaks, so the teacher has hands on activities for John to fit the curriculum. The teacher knows Lilly in the same class works best independently and with noise cancelling headphones, so the teacher fits the curriculum for Lilly inclusive post-secondary education program A type of program designed for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to help them continue their education in career/technical and independent living. For some it is to help them prepare for employment. A student with an intellectual disability is going to attend a post-secondary school that will help promote an active lifelong career and community participation at Columbus State University. STC Reflection Square What ‘squared’ with your thinking? That is, what ideas did you encounter in the reading that were consistent with what you already knew about teaching? I knew about IDEA and its general application to students with intellectual disabilities. I took a biology class that looked at genetic diseases/disorder, so I was aware of FASD, down syndrome, etc. I knew the identification process for students because of the past modules we did in this class, the biggest difference I saw was with IQ. Triangle What ‘pointed’ you in new directions? What new ideas did you discover in the readings? Discuss the ways in which the readings provided new understandings about teaching and learning. State a quote (or portion) AND point out how it directs your thinking in new/novel ways. The biggest new idea I approached was the special services that are available to children shortly after birth. I had no idea services were available to children before preschool. I think this early intervention sounds very helpful and valuable for helping the child develop and learn while the

The textbook says, “early intervention usually includes physical therapist and speech-language pathologist.” This made me google these two interventions and made me curious about how does physical therapy work with an infant? After reading this chapter I understand that there is a wide variety of resources that can be implemented for students with varying intellectual disabilities. Circle What thoughts are still “circling” in your mind? This section will require the most thoughtful reflection. In it you will discuss the ways in which you think you could use the new information to build on what you already know. In addition, you should write about the things that still puzzle you. Write about the questions it raised for you. Write questions about things you don’t understand, things that make you think of your own learning, and especially things that you relate to teaching and/or education. This chapter made me reflect on how this year with COVID must have so hard for the students, parents, and teachers. As a teacher now reflecting, I should have started the development of clear plans of action for the digital leaning earlier on, so that the development and execution could have been smoother and more efficient. The textbook went in depth in chapter 8 about the inclusive practices that student receive, but through digital learning some of the practices were not possible. This then made me think about how poverty played a role, and made the situation even harder. Overall, this chapter made me really empathize with the parents. How does providing help to parents that see struggling with their intellectually disabled child, not come across as condescending? Does having an intellectually disabled child make one socially isolated, how is this comabted?

How have your perceptions changed since you began the course? What misconceptions did you have about disability? My perceptions about disabilities have changed drastically since before the class I thought of disabilities in the stereotypical fashion but now I don’t see a disability I see an individual. There is no more handicap or disabled person, instead it is an individual who lives with a unique view in society. Some common misconceptions I had about disabilities was that people with disabilities don’t want to or can’t be in a relationship, people with disabilities are dependent on others for their entire lives, and that life with a disability isn’t a normal life. 2. Re-read the excerpt from “Welcome to Holland” by Emily Perl Kinglsey. What are your reactions to her description of having a child with a disability? Why is it important to consider parent perspectives in working with students with ID? How can you connect Kinglsey’s writing to your future work with parents of children with disabilities? I was intrigued and impressed with her description of having a child with a disability because I thought being told your child is going to be different forever would be a sad and angry time. It is important to consider parents perspectives because they are the ones that should know the child best and are the best advocate for their child. so, the parents want to provide the best opportunities at the earliest point possible for their child with ID. I will connect Kingsley’s writing to my future work with parents and children with disabilities by remembering to be empathetic to the parent, because “the pain of that will never, ever… go away”. In that, this is a lifelong responsibility for the parents. 3. Spend some time looking at the Southeast Postsecondary Education Alliance (SEPSEA) website . How many IPSE programs exist in Georgia? What are your reactions to learning about IPSE? How can IPSE programs be beneficial to students with ID? There are 8 IPSE programs in Georgia with one more on the way. I think ISPE programs are excellent for being able to provide a variety of experiences and opportunities for students with disabilities to grow and prepare for their next chapter in life. This program could help these students who are able to, realize their dream of continuing their studies in a college setting with peers their age.
