Unit 3: Critical Thinking Questions 1. In the unit, we learned that characterization is a key process when developing layers and depth for your character and for your piece of writing. Appearance is one way in which we define characters, but it is important not to make one- dimensional or generic characters. In three to five sentences, please re-write and expand on the following sentences characterizing a 30-year-old woman. Attempt to be less generic and more engaging. “Sarah, only 30 years old, had worked as a cashier at the grocery store most of her life. Her hair was plain brown and she never smiled. She seemed unhappy.” Sarah is a middle-aged woman who has a job at her local grocery store, she worked there for almost all her life. She is a brunette girl whose least favorite thing to do is smile. Most of the time she seems unhappy. 2. Indirect characterization can be a tricky concept to master. As the writer, you must show the reader who your character is through their speech, appearance, and actions rather than implicitly telling the reader. Please compose several sentences that would allow the reader to infer the following: Mike was an extremely funny person. Mike opened a Coke bottle, shoved some Mentos in it then pointed it at the principle’s face. Yesterday Mike wore a pair of yellow-striped leggings with a pink fluffy skirt and a monster high t-shirt to school. I was going to tell you a joke about kickboxing, but I forgot the punch line.
3. While the unit depicted eight different character types, it did not explain if it is necessary to include all eight character types in your story for it to be well- rounded. Please explore whether or not you believe that it is necessary, or even possible, to include all eight character types in a story. Give an example (real or made up) of how a story might be different without one (or more) of the main character types. Is it possible for a single character to fill the role of more than one character type? I think you need multiple characters because they all have a different role and story if you have only one person it would be boring to hold back a lot of details that could make the story better. 4. Part of learning how to be a good writer is learning to assess your work and the work of others. So, to practice this skill, please choose one of your favorite works of fiction (a short story, a novel, a TV show episode, or a movie), and evaluate how successfully the author was able to weave the theme through the story. Did the author utilize any of the following to weave in the theme: character actions, symbolic environment, repeating ideas, highlighting symbols, or contrasting values? Title: Author: Theme: How did the author weave in the theme? Select at least 3 and explain: Character actions: · Remy becoming a chef, · forms a friendship with Alfredo Linguini and together they make culinary masterpieces and overcome obstacles. · Colette, tatou, Anton Ego, and Auguste Guiteau play important roles showing themes of friendship and perseverance in each other. Symbolic environment : Repeating Ideas · Following your dreams connects with Remy because he continuously shows his passion for cooking. · Friendship and collaboration relate to Remy and Linguini's unlikely partnership leading to success and heartwarming moments. · Pursuing excellence characters strive for culinary perfection highlighting
the value of hard work and dedication. Highlighting Symbols · The ratatouille dish represents Remy's heritage and connection with his culinary roots. · Guiteau’s restaurant represents tradition, belief, and the pursuit of excellence. · The critic's hat represents power, influence, and high standards. · The spoon represents the connection between food, love, and family. · The rat represents Remy's identity and his ability to overcome what others think and feel about him. Contrasting Values? 5. At the end of the unit, it is stated that: “Through writing, your voice, yes, yours, will resonate through into the larger world and possibly change the existing reality, as a result. That, my friend, is a powerful gift and one that deserves the utmost respect and concentration.” Please describe a piece of writing that you have read that has been so powerful it changed your reality, or someone’s reality that you know. What made the writing so powerful? How did it change your/another’s reality? The poem states, “To overcome trust issues, you must start trusting to move on, you must let go. Healing starts within you”. This poem motivates me to realize self-importance how important it is to have boundaries within your life and how other people can't always be the reason for healing, I think it's important because this poem gives me a grasp of how much it means to care for yourself that much to the point where u take care of your feelings the proper way and that’s what I’ve recently learned that this past year when I thought other people could heal my hurt during a rough time in my life .
