You must call your instructor to check your work and sign it whenever you reach the point asking for the instructor’s initials or signature. ============================================================= Objectives: Laptop o Remove battery o Add and remove memory modules o Remove hard drive o Procedure to remove keyboard All-in-one o Remove the back panel of an all-in-one system o Remove hard drive o Remove memory modules Materials Supplied by Student : Anti-static wrist strap Set of precision screwdrivers Screw organizers (e.g. a plastic box with partitions) Materials Supplied by the College : Lenovo T440s Laptop Lenovo T440s User’s Guide (already uploaded on eCentennial) DELL WYSE 5470 All-In-One Thin Client DELL WYSE 5470 All-In-One Thin Client User Manual (already uploaded on eCentennial) Plastic/metallic pry tools (e.g. a spudger) Precautions: It is very easy to lose screws. You MUST pay attention and place all removed screws in an egg carton or another screw organizer, so you do not lose them. At the last part, before you get your marks, the professor will make sure that all screws are in place. If any screw is missing, you will lose the marks for this lab. In addition, do not over-tighten any screws. No components should be stacked. ============================================================== In this lab, work in groups of two. Before you print out the lab, record the information below by performing a 5- minute research on the Internet: What are the specifications of the Lenovo T440s laptop? Does the system boot up? Yes If the laptop fails to boot into Windows 10, ask the professor to exchange your laptop with another working T440s. However, IF THE SYSTEM IS FUNCTIONAL NOW BUT IS NOT AFTER THE LAB DUE TO STUDENT UNNECESSARILY BREAKING OR DAMAGING ANY PART, OR LOSING SCREWS, BOTH GROUP MEMBERS WILL GET ZERO. When you are about to remove screws and screws are missing, you MUST let your professor know about this and he/she will make a note of this. If you do not, it is assumed that all screws are all in place and the laptop has no missing screws or parts. 2. Right-click the Start button and use “System” to access system information. a. Which Operating system is installed on the laptop? Windows 10 Education b. How much memory is installed? 12 GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHz SODIMM 3. Connect the T440s to your cellphone’s mobile hotspot. If it works, Google “Speed Test” and record below the download throughput in Mb/s: 290 MBPS Download 20 MBPS Upload 4. Now take your Lenovo T440s hardware maintenance manual and user guide out as reference to get ready to disassemble the laptop and locate the parts. 5. Shut down the laptop properly and disconnect the power cord as well as any other connected devices. Turn the laptop over to view the bottom of it and gently rest it on the workbench after making sure nothing on the workbench will scratch the top cover of the Page 4 of 13

If necessary, use a few pieces of paper or soft cloth to prevent scratching the laptop top cover/screen. Now wear your anti-static wrist strap and attach it to a grounded surface. If you do NOT have an anti-static wrist strap, you will not be able to continue performing the lab after this point! 6. Remove the Battery. a. State in the space below the steps you will take to remove the battery and then remove it. You should be able to reveal the type and serial number of the laptop now. Turn Laptop Upside down To unlock battery lock, turn first latch to the left and second latch to right. Push battery in upward direction to remove it. What are the type and serial number of the laptop? Type: 20AQ-CT01WW s/n: 01211QR14/10 7. Remove the bottom Base Cover. a) State the steps you will take to remove the bottom base cover and remove it. There should be 8 screws. Remove the cover slowly and carefully using the techniques you learned from the videos and the manuals. 1. With screw driver, remove all the 8 screws. 2. Then, open the base cover with a spudger 8. Remove the Hard Drive. a. State the steps you will take to remove the hard drive and remove it. After opening bottom cover, Open the screw of the SSD Unplug SSD from the connector. Page 5 of 13

Now remove the hard drive, put it on a flat surface and take a picture after the hard drive is removed to prove that the hard drive has been removed 9. Remove SO-DIMM (Small Outline-Dual Inline Memory Modules) a. Locate the SO-DIMM slot. b. If there is a SO-DIMM installed, use two fingers to spread the holding clips apart until the clips are 45 o outward. c. Remove the memory module and put it on a flat metal surface and take a picture of the removed SO-DIMM. If the professor sees that the module and another object are stacked up, you get zero for this lab. 10. Steps to remove the Heat Sink/Heat Spreader Assembly a. State the steps you will take to remove the heatsink assembly BUT DO NOT remove it because, if you do so, you will need to replace the heatsink compound/thermal paste! Unplug the fan connector from the board. Unscrew the 4 screws. b. How many screws are used to mount and secure the heatsink/heat spreader on the CPU? 4 screws 11. Attempt to remove the Keyboard. a. Read the instructions in the downloaded manuals and state the steps you would take to remove the keyboard by inspecting the screw positions on the laptop but DO NOT remove it! With the help of tools, push notches upward between PRTSC+CTRL and CTRL + WIN keys. Unscrew 6 screws Pull down keyboard slightly then, lift up and carefully unlock ribbons. Page 6 of 13

Read the instructions in the downloaded manuals, inspect the laptop to find out how to remove the wireless adapter and state the steps you would take to remove the wireless adapter but DO NOT remove it or detach the antennas! Detach the 2 antennas attached to WAN card. remove the screw Call your instructor to inspect all the removed components as well as the screws placed in the screw organizer. The power cable and boot up your laptop Access the system information and show the amount of memory installed in the system. Then connect to your Wi-Fi hot spot to ensure that the laptop still works and connects to the Internet with no issues. What is the download throughput now? Figure 3 3. Remove the Back Cover Please be very careful while removing the back cover. None of the notches should be broken while trying to remove the back cover. a) Using a scribe, pry the back cover from the chassis. b) Ensure all the notches are unlocked using the scribe around the thin client. c) Lift the back cover away from the chassis of the thin client. Removing the solid state drive (if installed) a) Remove the screw (M2x3.5) that secures the solid-state drive card to the system board. b) Slide and remove the solid-state drive off the solid-state drive slot on the system board. Steps to remove the Heat Sink/Heat Spreader Assembly a) State the steps you will take to remove the heatsink assembly BUT DO NOT remove it because, if you do so, you will need to replace the heatsink compound/thermal paste. Unscrew the first screw near the heat sink. Unscrew 2, 3, 4 screws attached to the motherboard. Then, remove it. Call your professor to verify that the components are removed. Professor’s initials: 8. Now reassemble all the parts back to the all-in-one system. 9. Align the notch on the memory module with the tab on the memory-module slot. Slide the memory module firmly into the slot at an angle and press the memory module down until it clicks into place. 10. Align the notch on the solid-state drive with the tab on the solid-state drive slot and slide the solid-state drive into the solid-state drive slot on the system board (if removed). Replace the screw (M2x3.5) that secures the solid-state drive to the system board. 11. Place the back cover on to the system chassis. Align the notches on the back cover with the slots on the chassis. Press the back cover to the system chassis and ensure all the locks are secured in position. 12. Align the screw holes on the stand bracket to the screw holes on the easel stand. Tighten the two screws (M4x8) that secure the easel stand to the chassis. Slide and place the stand cover on the stand bracket. 13. Test the system to make sure it still works. If it doesn’t work after you reassembled it, inform the professor about this.
