The Rampal Dilemma: Energy vs. Environment
A contentious project that has caused much controversy and polarized views in the midst of Bangladesh's energy crisis is the building of the Rampal Power Plant. Because of its potential effects on the environment and its importance in meeting the country's energy needs, the Rampal Power Plant project, situated close to the Sundarbans, has sparked a heated debate. When the project was first proposed in the early 2010s, the controversy surrounding the Rampal Power Plant grew more intense as construction moved forward. The project entails building and running
a coal-based power plant, significantly contributing to industrialization, job opportunities, and, most importantly, the country’s energy needs. It also raises concerns about the possible effects of climate change, biodiversity loss, and air and water quality. Numerous parties are involved in the
project, including the Bangladesh government and BIFPCL (Bangladesh India Friendship Power Company Limited). Bangladesh's urgent need for economic growth, energy security, and raising living standards can support the need for the Rampal Power Plant. Environmentalists and conservationists, on the other hand, contend that the power plant's potential for environmental harm outweighs its advantages. The burning question is, what steps can be taken to balance the need for energy development with preserving the Sundarbans ecosystem while considering the potential environmental and economic risks?
Hasan 2
The first and most important step in addressing the intricate matter pertaining to the Rampal Power Plant is to ban the project. This can be made effective by switching to renewable energy sources like hydroelectric, solar, and wind power rather than using coal-based energy. To determine the most practical and sustainable course of action, the government of Bangladesh can
work cooperatively with regional environmental organizations and activists to conduct thorough environmental impact assessments. The country can address the environmental risks associated with projects like the Rampal Power Plant and gradually wean itself off fossil fuels by implementing clean energy initiatives and integrating a diversified energy portfolio. This tactical change meets the country's energy needs while addressing the underlying causes of environmental degradation. Stricter environmental laws and using more environmentally friendly
energy sources could reduce negative effects on the Sundarbans ecosystem and protect its biodiversity and ecological resilience for future generations.
To effectively tackle the complex issues surrounding the Rampal Power Plant, the crucial first step entails banning the fuel-dominated power plant could be a viable solution. The primary objective of the initial keyword search is to obtain background information on the Rampal Power
Plant issue. To provide context for the solution, a keyword search will be conducted to figure out
alternate energy sources that can be preferred over banning coal-based power plant. Next, a quote opposing the solution—for example, that the Sundarbans can be protected with the current power plant's modern technology, without outsourcing alternative solutions—will be collected.

“The Government rejected the environmentalists’ concerns. They claimed that they
use the most modern technologies and follow international organizations’ guidelines to implement the project. These safeguards would save the Sundarbans.”

Peer Review
1.
In the introduction, how has the writer tried to show that the problem is interesting, significant, and problematic? How could the writer engage you more fully with the initial
problem?
The writer has made the problem interesting and significant by highlighting the controversy and differentiated views surrounding the Rampal Power Plant, highlighting its potential impact on the environment and its importance in addressing Bangladesh's energy crisis. To engage the reader more fully, the writer could provide specific examples
or statistics related to the environmental risks or energy demand in Bangladesh, which would help to further emphasize the urgency and complexity of the problem.
2.
How does the writer provide cues that his/her purpose is to explore a question rather than argue a thesis? How might the opening section of the draft be improved?
The writer's purpose to explore a question rather than argue a thesis is evident in the essay's structure, where different perspectives and solutions are presented. However, the opening section could be framed as a clear solution and their implications on the environment and energy sector.
3.
You should explain whether or not your partner's essay follows the directed organization given in our "Exploratory Essay Structure" -- Intro (with a research question for a thesis),
a solution paragraph, a conclusion that discusses their research strategy, and 3 sources

with quotes. Explain/give details of how your partner does this -- what is their problem, solution etc.
Yes, the essay follows the directed organization for an exploratory essay structure. It begins with an introduction that sets up the problem and poses a research question regarding the Rampal Power Plant. The solution paragraph suggests banning the
project and transitioning to renewable energy sources. The conclusion discusses the research strategy and three sources with quotes are included to provide background information, support for the proposed solution, and opposing perspectives on the solution.
4.
Does your partner compile 3 secondary sources, using MLA formatting for the citations, and which has a quote that supports background information to the problem and two positions that disagree with each other about the solution -- (one postion in favor of the solution and one position against the solution in para #2). You should check your partner's citation formatting and then explain how one of their quotes supports the background of their problem, how a quote from one of their sources supports their solution, and how a quote from one of their sources opposes their solution.
The essay includes three secondary sources with MLA formatting citations. The quote from Islam, Morshed Bin’s article supports the background information on the Rampal Power Plant issue. The quote from Sultana, Saima, and Mohammad Tahzeeb Anwar's article supports the solution proposed in the essay by suggesting alternative power sources. The quote from Islam, Md Nazrul, and Md Al Amin's article presents an

opposing viewpoint by highlighting the modern technologies used in the Rampal Power Plant to protect the Sundarbans.
5.
Another part of an exploratory paper involves the writer's strong response to each source. Where in this draft is there evidence of the writer's own critical thinking and questioning?
Where are the writer's ideas particularly strong and effective? Where are the writer's own ideas undeveloped, unclear, or weak?
The writer demonstrates critical thinking and questioning throughout the essay, particularly in analyzing different viewpoints and proposing a solution that considers environmental and economic factors. The writer's ideas are strong and effective in presenting a balanced argument. However, some areas could further develop
on the writer's own ideas by discussing more challenges or drawbacks of implementing alternative energy sources.
