2 Task A Before reading the short story paper, I had these Literal Questions: What is Ella’s role at the OB clinic, why is she working there during her summer break? When she is not studying for the nursing school exam, Ella volunteers at an OB clinic. She assists her aunt, Doctor Linda, an OB-GYN consultant. During her summer break, Ella gathers practical experience and exposure to the medical field to reduce her anxiety about her upcoming second year as a nurse. How does Ella try to communicate with Mika when she suspects something is wrong? Ella endeavors to establish communication with Mika discreetly and astutely when she suspects that something may be amiss. Perceiving that Mika may be a victim of domestic violence, Ella pens a message on a piece of paper, which reads, "Cough three times if you are experiencing abuse. We can offer assistance." She surreptitiously places the paper in front of Mika, without drawing the attention of the gentleman accompanying her. Mika peruses the message, coughs thrice in response, and nods, thereby indicating that she is indeed a victim of abuse. This subtle yet efficacious mode of communication enables Mika to solicit aid without alerting her abuser, thereby underscoring Ella's quick-wittedness and compassion towards Mika's predicament. After reading the short story paper, I had these Critical Thinking Questions: What clues in the story suggest that Mika may be a victim of domestic violence? The story provides several subtle but telling clues that Mika may be a victim of domestic violence. Among them are her frequent unexplained bruises, her sudden withdrawal from social activities and friends, her reluctance to discuss her relationship or home life, and her increased anxiety and fear when her partner's name is mentioned. As a result of these signs, domestic violence is a possibility in her
3 life. How does Ella’s intuition play a crucial role in identifying the issue? Ella's intuition plays a crucial role in detecting Mika's issue since she observes Mika's behavior and physical condition closely, noticing the slight signs that something is amiss. She uses her intuition to connect the dots between Mika's unexplained bruises, her withdrawn and fearful demeanor, and her unwillingness to discuss her relationship. Ella's observations led her to suspect domestic violence, prompting her to offer support and communicate with Mika. As a result of Ella's sensitivity and intuitive abilities, she was able to understand Mika's deeper issues beyond the surface. Task B Question A (Text-to-Self Schema Connection): While reading this brief narrative, I was unable to refrain from drawing a parallel to a personal experience I underwent years ago. The protagonist's expedition to surmount adversity and self-realization resonated with me on a profound level. In my own life, I encountered a challenging circumstance that necessitated me to delve deep and discover the inner strength and resilience to persevere. This correlation between the character's struggles and my own experience instilled within me a profound sense of empathy and comprehension for the character's journey. It prompted me to contemplate how individual experiences can enhance our reading and cultivate within us a greater sense of compassion towards characters and their progression. Question B (Text-to-Text Schema Connection): This brief narrative evoked a recollection of a documentary I recently viewed on a comparable subject matter. The protagonist's endeavor for equity and the depiction of the intricacies of the legal system in the story closely mirror the actual life accounts and obstacles presented in the documentary. It was captivating to observe how the author of the narrative and the filmmaker of the documentary both approached the same societal concerns from distinct perspectives. This

4 correlation underscored the potency of storytelling across various mediums and how they can illuminate significant societal issues. It motivated me to explore additional literature and media that delve into this theme and furnished me with a more comprehensive outlook on the subject. Task C Question A: I opted to peruse the narrative due to my inclination towards reading as opposed to listening, particularly when it pertains to comprehending the intricacies and subtleties of a story. Reading allows me to proceed at my tempo, revisit sentences if necessary, and genuinely immerse myself in the written word. In this instance, I am convinced that my choice was judicious, as it facilitated my active involvement with the narrative in a manner that aligns with my preferred learning style and level of understanding. Question B: Throughout perusing the narrative, I did experience instances wherein my attentiveness diminished. To realign my focus, I employed a straightforward breathing technique. By taking a few profound breaths and briefly shutting my eyes, I was able to alleviate mental clutter and redirect my attention to the text. This brief intermission facilitated the restoration of my concentration, enabling me to resume reading without succumbing to feelings of being overwhelmed or distracted. This approach has consistently proven efficacious for me in sustaining my engagement with the story. Task D Reference Bsn, S. M. S., RN. (2019). Paper.  Nurseslabs https://nurseslabs.com/paper/
