Prompt D:
What are some examples of rhetoric that you see or hear on a daily basis? What are some ways
that you create rhetoric? What messages are you trying to communicate?
Response:
As rhetoric is persuasive speaking or writing, there are many instances in which I see and
hear this daily. One of the most common forms of rhetoric that I see and hear every day is
various forms of advertising. Whether the method of advertising be a video or article posted to
one of various social media platforms, such as Facebook, or a verbally read advertisement via the
radio or a podcast, or a physical piece of advertising found in a magazine, newspaper, and even
billboards. There is rhetoric surrounding us at all points of our lives and companies are
constantly working to persuade us that we need their products and/or services.
Another example of rhetoric I receive almost daily is various forms of persuasion from
my son or wife. My four-year-old son is constantly trying to convince me that he needs new toys
and has many ways of trying to persuade me or his mother of this. In addition, I am regularly
receiving rhetoric from my wife about things she believes would be beneficial, whether it be
something we should buy that may benefit her or our family, or something that she believes we
should be doing to change our daily routine.
One of the ways that I am commonly creating rhetoric in my own life is when I am trying
to convince my friends and family to also enjoy a piece of media that I have watched or
experienced. I often will finish a movie or TV show and feel a need to share this experience with
those around me. The message I am trying to communicate to others in these instances is that I
truly have enjoyed this piece of media, and I simply feel that they would enjoy it as well. It is
very gratifying for me when I can persuade someone to watch something, and they then share
with me that they enjoyed it. The audience in these times is typically my friends, family, or
anyone who is willing to listen.
