Reflection The easiest of the four sources for me to locate was a Tier II source, which I located an article from a credible nonacademic source. As Amy Guptill in Four Tiers of Sources and How to Tell the Difference advises that Tier II sources can be found through google searches using “.gov” or “.org,” I completed a search in Google for my topic of Work-Life Balance with “.org”. Using this search method, I was successfully able to locate a resourceful article written by Mental Health America about their thoughts on the importance of a work-life balance. The most difficult source to locate was the Tier I source. As the Tier I source needed to be a scholarly publication such as a peer-reviewed journal, it took much longer to find an appropriate piece that matched my topic and the reframing I am presenting. In my reframing essay, I am planning to propose that having a perfect work-life balance may not be necessary for success and am using the examples of entrepreneurs as they often work long hours which take up great amounts of their personal time. In this peer-reviewed article, the authors detail the drive entrepreneurs have towards working instead of dedicating that time to their personal lives, which I felt was applicable to my essay. I feel that I will be mostly utilizing the peer-reviewed journal for my Tier I source as this directly applies to my argument and the reframing of the conventional wisdom that I am proposing. This article specifically highlights the great lengths taken by entrepreneurs to achieve their goals in their careers, and aids in the idea that a work-life balance may not be necessary. While I found other sources that do not necessarily agree with this argument, they may not be completely unapplicable. In this essay, I aim to explore this reframing and persuade the audience that a work-life balance is not necessary, and I feel that it is vital to understand both sides of the argument prior to presenting my reframing. I feel that there are many cases where a Tier IV
source could still be valuable in an academic paper as it is always important to understand the opinions of the public, especially when working to formulate an argumentation. With a further understanding of both sides of an argument and better knowledge of the public’s feelings regarding a specific topic, it can allow the author to present their new idea more effectively. The main difference between the Tier I and Tier IV sources that I have found is the tone of the authors throughout the pieces. As Tier I sources are peer-reviewed academic publications that include rigorous research and analysis, the journal I found for this source is naturally presented in a much more professional tone. The source I found for Tier IV is spoken in a much more personal tone and lacks any reference to studies or research being conducted as throughout this opinion piece, the author presents myths that exist surrounding the work-life balance and they present how to fix potential problems. I feel that if a Tier III or Tier IV article is interesting, but a more reputable source is needed for a paper, one area that can be checked is any citations. If the author of the chosen Tier III or Tier IV source has a list of citations available with any research they may have completed, these citations could be used to find the original source of these ideas or facts that were provided. Using these citations, if available, may present the author of the paper with a higher tier of source that couple be applicable and more reputable for their paper. The Tier III or IV source may also simply present new ideas that the author of the proposed paper may not have though of yet, inspiring them to use these new ideas to conduct further research – leading to an academic and more reputable source to reference and cite.
