Module 4 | Reading Journal – Building a Three-Story Thesis (Ch. 12)
1.
How does a five-paragraph essay differ from an "organic" college paper, according
to this chapter? In what contexts do you think the five-paragraph essay is still a
useful structure? Why is it not helpful in other contexts—what’s the problem?
Based on the chapter, there are multiple ways in which a five-paragraph essay differs
from an “organic” college paper. Some of the key areas which the two types of essays
differ are the structure, depth and complexity, and thesis development. Five-paragraph
essays have rigid structures which have a traditional format including an introduction,
three body paragraphs and a conclusion. In contrast, an “organic” college paper has a
more flexible structure than can vary based on the author’s approach and their topic. The
five-paragraph essay has its benefits as it can be useful to introduce new writers to basic
essay structure and is often used in standardized testing such as the SAT or ACT. A five-
paragraph essay is a simple and efficient way to present a thesis and supporting points.
There are also drawbacks to a five-paragraph essay as well, in situations where an
“organic” college paper may be more appropriate. These essays are not suitable for
complex topics that require more in-depth analysis and research. The structure of these
essays can limit a writer’s creativity and their ability to adapt to the topic’s specific needs.
2.
What is a three-story thesis, and why does it matter? What’s the problem with a
one-story thesis?
A three-story thesis is an effective method to developing a strong thesis statement in
essay writing. This method matters as it provides a structured approach to formulating a
comprehensive and well-supported thesis. The three-story thesis framework can assist in
creating a thesis statement that expands beyond a one-dimensional claim. The first story
of a three-story thesis represents the foundational facts and background information
applicable to the thesis. This first story will describe the context surrounding the topic to
ensure the reader is informed on the matter at hand. The second story of the three-story
thesis framework introduces the writer’s arguable or interpretive point. This story of the
framework presents the central argument being supported and expands beyond the simple
factual statements, adding depth to the argument. The third and final story of the three-
story thesis explores larger implications and any significance of the argument from the
second story. This story answers the “So What?” questions by explaining why the
argument matters in a broader context. This shows the writer has thought deeply about
the issue when formulating the thesis and they have considered all possible implications.
3.
Put the following “stories” of a thesis in order to make a strong thesis statement:
Despite their appeal to patients, robotic pets should not be used widely, since
they cause more problems than they solve.
In recent years, robotic pets have been used in medical settings to help
children and elderly patients feel emotionally supported and loved.
Shifting affection to robotic pets rather than live animals suggests a major
change in empathy and humanity and could have long-term costs that have
not been fully considered.
Although robotic pets have been shown to provide emotional support to children
and elderly patients in medical settings, their widespread use is concerning and
should be discouraged. Robotic pets could desensitize people to the needs of
living animals and have other unforeseen long-term consequences.
4.
Here are examples of one-story theses. Come up with three-story versions of each
one. Review the article for examples!
Television programming includes content that some find objectionable.
Objectionable content in television programming can have negative effects on
viewers, especially children. Steps should be taken to protect viewers from this
content.
First-year college students must learn how to independently manage their
time.
College freshmen need to learn to manage their time on their own to do well in
school, in their personal lives, and in their careers.
5.
Write a three-story thesis on your own topic, following the same format as the
examples in the chapter. Your argument will almost certainly evolve as you continue
to work through drafting and peer review, and that's ok. Consider this a draft.
The traditional work-life balance is obsolete for entrepreneurs. Successful entrepreneurs
typically value work over life, are willing to work long hours to achieve their goals and
will strive to succeed at all costs. While entrepreneurs have a need to maintain their
mental and physical health, the traditional work-life balance is not a necessity for their
success.
