Travis Winslow Professor Drummond WR 323 – Advanced Writing & Argumentation November 7, 2023 Module 6 | Drafting Plan and Timeline What is the central question you hope to pursue or problem you hope to solve in the Proposal Essay? The central question or problem that I plan to explore for my Proposal Essay is screen time and phone usage in our youth, its mental impact, and ways to circumnavigate this. What audience(s) will it target? My target audience for my Proposal Essay will primarily be parents and guardians of today's youth. I feel that this is the most applicable audience for an essay about screen time and phone usage in today's youth as the parents and guardians are the ones that enable the screen time in the first place. I am a parent myself and screen time is a nice tool at times, but you can see the decline in focus and attention span over time, and the attachment to electronics growing with age. I think that I can use my perspective as a father and with additional research to formulate clear examples of how screen time may be damaging to the mental development of our youth and formulate some strategies that parents and guardians could use alternatively to screen time. What voices or perspectives do you think you'll need to incorporate to get a well-rounded view of the question you're asking? Where would you go to find those perspectives, and how would you incorporate them into your own argument? In effort of finding a well-rounded view of the problem I am trying to solve, I believe that there will be multiple different perspectives beneficial to incorporate. One of the first perspectives that will benefit in getting a well-rounded view will be the perspective of existing parents and guardians regarding their experiences when dealing with screen time in their children. If I plan to propose a solution or alternative strategies to parents for avoiding screen time, I will first need to gain a better understanding of the parental experience. This will include attempting to answer questions like how much screen time their children watch throughout the day, if they have noticed any impacts from the screen time on their children’s behavior or attentiveness, if they see this as an issue, and if they have taken any steps already to overcome this. If I am not able to directly interview other parents to research this matter, I will be primarily incorporating existing interviews that may be available from scholarly sources and/or online. I would use these perspectives gained from parents and guardians to (hopefully) better my argument of screen time being a rising public issue as it is damaging to developing minds. With these experiences I aim to learn about, I can better formulate strategies for avoiding screen time that are more applicable and appropriate to the typical familial unit.
I believe that it will also be beneficial to find perspectives that may exist from professionals and researchers discussing the matter of screen time and its impact on the human mind, and, more specifically, the developing minds of children. I will likely be able to locate information relating to this topic from scholarly sources and online. I aim to find more data on this topic of screen time from those who are professionals in their field, those who are credible to discuss the impacts of screen time on a scientific level, and those who are also aiming to research this topic to broaden the public interest in this matter. With any information that can be learned from these groups, I aim to strengthen my arguments that screen time can be damaging. Lastly, I feel that, if possible, it would be excellent to learn more about the perspective of teachers and coaches. As children and young people spend such a large amount of time in school, there is the possibility for a dynamic where more time is spent with schoolteachers and various coaches than one’s parents or guardians. Thus, these individuals can provide an excellent perspective on what they witness from their students/players/etc. each day. Similarly to the perspectives of parents and guardians, any knowledge I can gain on this topic from teachers and coaches will be crucial to developing a better understanding of screen time’s impact and formulate better strategies for avoiding screen time. What kinds of research will you need to conduct in order to understand the context of your subject more fully? What kinds of sources or evidence will you need to include? I will need to conduct research using Oregon State University’s online library to attempt to find related scholarly sources such as academic papers and studies regarding screen time, perspectives on the topic, and coverage of the impact on developing minds. I will also be attempting to conduct personal interviews with as many related people as possible, such as parents and guardians, teachers, and coaches. Lastly, I will be using Tier II through Tier IV sources, mostly through online searches, to find any further supporting information that may be beneficial to formulating my arguments. Create a drafting plan complete with timeline. This can be done as a list of dates or in a table. Which of the labor-based grading options do you plan to complete? How will you scaffold your writing process across this project? I plan to first finish a thorough outline of each of the points and supporting pieces of information I can compile to make the writing process easier for myself. While I do not have many concerns about being able to meet the basic parameters, I want to do as much work as possible to ensure I can receive an excelling grade on this paper. I plan to utilize the supporting assignments for this essay and the feedback from my peers as resources to optimize my paper and strengthen my arguments. As my schedule with work and family limits the amount of time I am able to dedicate to schoolwork throughout the week, I plan to continue using any available time I have each day to work on this essay in addition to my other courses and assignments.
