Template for Reflection after Doing Your Interactive Read Aloud (5 bonus points)
1.
What book did you read?
Goldy Luck and the Three Pandas 2.
Was it fiction or nonfiction?
Fiction 3.
Describe what happened during your read aloud, e.g., what you did and how children responded, what might have surprised you, etc. During the read-aloud session, I observed a delightful surprise in the children's reactions. I began
by mentioning that the book was a retelling of a familiar fairytale, and their faces instantly lit up with excitement. It turned out that they had recently explored the classic story of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" during a storytelling unit. As we delved into the pages of "Goldy Luck and the Three Pandas," the children remained thoroughly engaged and attentive. What pleasantly surprised me was their ability to draw connections between the two stories, making insightful observations and comparisons. Their memory skills were impressive as they recalled details from
the previous unit and seamlessly linked them to the current read-aloud. Witnessing their enthusiasm and analytical thinking was a rewarding experience, and it highlighted the depth of their engagement with literature. The read-aloud not only entertained them but also sparked a vibrant discussion, showcasing their ability to connect and reflect on the stories they encounter.
4.
Reflecting on the plan you developed (in lecture) for the read aloud, explain how it helped you and what you might want to include when planning for a read aloud in the future. The plan I developed for the read-aloud provided a structured framework that proved immensely helpful in achieving my goals before, during, and after the session. It enabled me to establish clear objectives and ensured a deeper connection between the children and the content of the book. The preparation helped create an engaging and purposeful experience for the children. Reflecting on this experience, I recognize the effectiveness of having a well-
thought-out plan in enhancing the overall impact of the read-aloud. In future planning, I might consider selecting a book that is entirely new to the children. This would provide an opportunity to observe their ability to connect with unfamiliar material, further honing their analytical and interpretive skills. The focus would be on fostering adaptability and encouraging a broader range
of responses during the read-aloud sessions.
5.
Were you able to leave the book in the classroom library area so children can enjoy it more than once? Yes, I ensured the book found its place in the classroom library, allowing the children to enjoy it repeatedly. By placing it there, they have the option to read it independently or request another read-aloud session from either me or another teacher. This way, the children have the
opportunity to revisit the story, explore the illustrations, and engage with the text at their own pace whenever they desire.
6.
What are a few simple props you could provide if children want to retell or dramatize parts of the book?
To facilitate children's retelling or dramatization of parts of the book, I could offer a few simple props. One idea is to create and print images of "Goldy Luck" and the "Three Pandas" on wooden blocks, allowing them to engage in pretend play by building houses and chairs in the block area. Additionally, providing puppets representing the characters and animals featured in the book could serve as excellent props for imaginative play. These props would enhance their storytelling experience and encourage creative expression during dramatic play.
