Thesis Statement (Three-Story Model) Story 1: Who are the characters you’re comparing? What are the stories? Story 2: What are your bases for comparison? Story 3: If we understand these characters better, what insight do we gain? Combined Model: The characters Dee in “ Everyday Use ” and Prophet in “ Miracle , The Proximity of Distance " are similar/distinct in terms of their Character Presentation , Social Position and Personality (Story 1 and Story 2). Comparison Chart Bases for Comparison Dee from "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker Prophet from "The Miracle" by Tope Folarin Character Presentation Confident, insensitive, and presumptuous (Dee from "Everyday Use" is presented as confident, insensitive, and presumptuous. She possesses a self-assured demeanor that can be perceived as arrogant, and her actions and words often display a lack of consideration for the feelings and perspectives of others). Desperate, commanding, and paradoxical (The prophet from "The Miracle" is portrayed as desperate, commanding, and paradoxical (Folarin,2012, p. 75). Despite his physical weaknesses, he exudes a sense of urgency and authority, commanding the attention and faith of the congregation. His character embodies the desperation of individuals seeking miracles, while also embodying the paradox of claiming divine power while relying on the faith of others.). "His blindness is a confirmation of his power. It's the burden he bears on our behalf. He can see more than we will ever Foundation Writing 1 Instructor: Christian Aguiar
see" (Folarin,2012, p. 76). Social Position Values education and asserts superiority (Dee's social position in "Everyday Use" is influenced by her access to education and her aspirations for a different life. She values her education and sees it as a source of empowerment and superiority over her mother and sister. However, this education seems to distances her from important people. Like her mother said, "She had read us without mercy before, forcing them to speak, lies, other people's habits, living in both of us, sitting under her voice in difficulty and ignorance" (Walker, 2013, p. 6). Claims ability to perform miracles -The prophet's social position in "The Miracle" is based on his claim to have the ability to perform miracles. Despite his physical limitations, he holds a position of authority and influence within the congregation. The prophet used Christian beliefs and hope to persuade the crowd, although could not perform any genuine miracles. The young man said, "This healing isn't even intended for me…" (Folarin,2012, p. 79) Personality Patronizing and self-centered. Dee is portrayed as patronizing, expressing her determination to visit Mama and Maggie regardless of what poorly constructed housing they like to occupy, "She wrote to me, and she will try to see us no matter what life we choose." (Walker, 2013, p. 7) Distance from faults, relying on faith (Folarin,2012, p. 80) References Foundation Writing 1 Instructor: Christian Aguiar
