I.
Based on your current favorite choice for a topic/debate within the course theme announcement, “
cultural diversity and identity
”, answer the following: Multiculturalism in Urban Settings: Investigate the effects of multiculturalism in urban environments. Discuss the opportunities and challenges of living in culturally diverse cities.
A. State your stance within the debate you chose, without using “I.”
(1 sentence)
The goal of the research on multiculturalism's impacts in urban settings is to provide a fair analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of living in a multicultural city.
B. Why is your stance a good one for an argument research essay? (at least 3 sentences)
According to Ashraful Alam, migration has a role in the rise of multiculturalism in these particular contexts, and it may also explore the planning implications of this phenomenon; it recognizes the complexity of urban multiculturalism and permits the examination of its advantages and disadvantages. (Ashraful Alam, 2022)
By examining both advantages and disadvantages, the essay may provide readers with a thorough grasp of how cultural variety affects urban living. Qian Cheng, Hongru Wang, and Yushen Li's research method allows for a comprehensive study that may support well-informed conversations on the advantages and challenges of diversity.
(Qian Cheng, 2022, )
C. Who might disagree with your stance and why? (at least 3 sentences)
"The Role of Cultural Heritage in Promoting Urban Sustainability: A Brief Review" by Sanober Naheed and Salman Shooshtarian that Potential dissenters might include individuals who advocate for cultural assimilation, arguing that too much cultural diversity in urban settings may lead to societal fragmentation and a lack of shared values. Some may argue that multiculturalism challenges social cohesion, particularly when cultural differences result in tensions or conflicts.
(Sanober Naheed, 2022,)
Additionally, those prioritizing economic stability might express concerns about resource allocation and job market pressures associated with immigration in culturally diverse cities.
D. Who do you imagine your audience will be? (at least 2 sentences)

The audience for this essay could include urban planners, policymakers, sociologists, and individuals interested in understanding the dynamics of cultural diversity in urban environments. Additionally, citizens residing in culturally diverse cities or those contemplating moving to such areas might find the essay relevant for gaining insights into their challenges and opportunities.
II. In a full paragraph of 7-9 sentences, and without performing any research, please note what you already understand about the debate and what you do not already understand about the debate:
I understand that the debate on multiculturalism in urban settings involves a nuanced exploration of cultural diversity's positive and negative effects on city life. The discussion most likely looks at the advantages of a more accepting and tolerant culture in metropolitan settings, as well as from creative expression and cultural interaction. It also explores the difficulties of diversity, such as possible disputes, problems with integration, and financial worries about immigration. However, without particular research, I cannot provide a deep understanding of the arguments and supporting data that the different sides of this dispute have put forward. I'm unsure how to interpret the complex perspectives that may exist, how much of an impact these effects have, or how much of an impact cultural variety has on many aspects of urban life. I know the discussion around multiculturalism in urban environments focuses on cultural variety's good and negative impacts on cities. To have a more thorough grasp of the intricacies underlying diversity in urban contexts; further study is thus necessary.
It encompasses opportunities like cultural exchange, creativity, a more tolerant society, and challenges like potential conflicts, assimilation issues, and
economic concerns. However, without specific details about the various perspectives within this debate, I lack a detailed understanding of the specific arguments and evidence presented by individuals on different sides.
III. Shortly, you will begin scholarly research in the library. This research will help you find opposing viewpoints (sources that disagree with you) and supporting viewpoints (sources that agree with you), as well as information to fill in missing gaps in knowledge you may have. With all three of these goals in mind, please list five possible search phrases you might use when you begin searching in the library.
