Farm Boy is one of the book in the series of the Little House written by Laura Wilder.
The book is based on Laura’s husband Almanzo Wilder who grew up in the 1860s in a Malone
town, New York
(Wilder, 2004)
. The book focuses on Almanzo life as a farm boy, his childhood
and his interaction with his family. The theme of the book is a round agricultural life and self-
sufficiency which is demonstrated through the daily activities of Almanzo as a farm boy. Farm
boy also talks about the challenges Almanzo faced as he matured to adulthood. The book talks
about his farm activities waking up at 5 am to milk cows and feed them.
Almanzo also planted
during growing seasons and tended for the crops. Through these farm activities Almanzo and his
family is able to sustain themselves. This book helps us to understand Laura’s husband this work
ethics and the values that shaped his adulthood.
His handwork saw his father reward him with a
yoke for his two cows named star and Bright and he starts training them. Almanzo manages to
teach the two cows on how to pull the yoke on command. Almanzo shifts to horses when a new
colt named Starlight is born during spring. One great moment in the book is when Almanzo finds
a wallet filled with $ 1500 and returns it to the old grumpy man, Mr. Thompson. The old man
disreseocts Almanzo efforts but Mr. Paddock comes to his rescue forcing the old man to give
Almanzo 200 dollars
(Wilder, 2004)
.
This is moment for Almanzo because not only is he
rewarded but he is given a job opportunity to become a wagon builder. When he chooses to be a
farmer than wagon builder as offered by Mr. Paddock, his father rewards his effort by giving him
Starlight the colt. I would say that this book by Laura teaches us about handwork, honesty and
resilience as demonstrated by Almanzo and his family.
